Brave
With one firm tug the lever was moved, and as power flowed through the computer core in front of me I felt my heart begin to beat away in my chest. Subtly the room filled with the sounds of still machinery humming back to life. Carefully I took a few steps backward as I swallowed a lump of nervousness. What had I done...? That question was repeating in my mind at full speed, but gathering my courage I stepped back into the elevator and made my way up to the room above me. As the doors opened with a loud clank my eyes focused on the rather large chair that appeared to be the interface to the machine.
My mouth was going dry but my curiosity demanded action. So hesitantly I sat down before slowly running my hands over the two arm rests. Gathering a deep breath, I then pushed my glasses higher up the bridge of my nose as I reached to activate the monitor. With a single button push my face was engulfed with light as the screen came to life in front of me. My mind emptied in that one instant as I felt my pulse stall and my jaw go slack. Reflected in my glasses was...
"Hello." The simple word came drifting from her lips as one melodious sound.
"H-Hello..." I whispered in a shaky reply as my heart began to beat again. With the trusting innocence of a new born baby she gazed out at me as a smile formed on her beautiful face. "Who are you?" She asked sincerely. Heat spread across my cheeks as I felt every word drift just beyond my reach. "I-I'm...uh..." Curiously she tilted her head to the side as she scanned over my face. "J-Jeremie..." I finally managed to choke out. "Jeremie...?" She whispered softly to herself as if testing the name on her tongue. "Who...are you...?" I asked gently as I fought to dispel both my nervousness and my disbelief. A few silent moments drifted by before a slight frown furrowed her brow.
"I don't know..."
Seeing her unhappiness made a part of my heart cringe. The fear of the unknown playing inside my mind told me to walk away and shut off this strange dream once and for all. But biting back such a cowardly thought, I gathered all the bravery I could muster. I gathered all the things that normally never came easy to me... Something in my chest was compelling me...something beyond simple curiosity. "Um...m-maybe we could...figure it out together...?" I felt completely ridiculous speaking to a computer program, but as I watched her green eyes light up with a new found happiness I... "Thank you...Jeremie." She said softly as her sincere trusting smile returned. I began to believe that she was...alive. A slight smile slowly rose to my face as I felt a strange sensation gently pour from my heart.
"Um...let's see if we can find some answers." I said in an attempt to reassure her as I reached to hesitantly peck at a few keys in front of me. My body was numb with a million questions...but I...I couldn't seem to focus on them. All that mattered to me was helping to answer the simple question I had asked her. Maybe I was dreaming... I thought as logic started to catch up with me. But even if I was...I... Her eyes were patiently looking out at me as I slowly rummaged through the interface. Almost as if... Another lump of fear built in my throat as I realized she was...depending on me. Whatever...whoever...she was... Never in my life had anything or anyone looked at me like she was now... Almost like a lost child relying on me to guide her home. I was probably out of my mind I reasoned...but at the same time in my heart... I felt completely devoted to helping her. And just like that...I realized my reason to be brave.
