It Was

Kim was feeling nervous. It was like being back at the Junior Prom, scared but excited, awkweird but exhilarating. As she listened to the last bars of Alabama's "Angels Among Us," she downed the last of her red wine and got up.

"Going for the stage, KP?" Ron asked with a slightly bemused look on his face. Ron was no doubt remembering her adamant refusal to sign up for the talent show, right before he signed her up anyway.

"Yeah, Ron, and I think you'll like the song I've got in mind." Karaoke night had become part of their Friday Night tradition ever since their fourteenth wedding anniversary when Ron had surprised her with an unexpected rendition of "I'm a Believer" by Smashmouth. It had caught her off guard, to be sure. She was certain he would do some slow love song or something, but as her best friend/husband used to say in their teen years, "Never Be Normal," and Ron continued living up to that credo to this day. That very motto was why Kim was here tonight. It was something he didn't expect from her, but that fact didn't help settle the butterflies in her stomach or keep the pounding of blood through her temples from feeling a racquetball game being played by her blood vessels.

Nonetheless, she gathered her courage and silently recited her own family's mantra to herself as she approached the stage. She heard the music start, the soft, opening bars with piano and guitar flowing through her, and with it, she remembered all the times she had thought she felt something for the man for whom she lived but had squashed those feeling under a sheet of insecurity and indifference. She then remembered that verse of the song she was fixing to sing. She could do this. She was Kim Possible. She could do anything, and looking at Ron, she felt herself relax as she began to sing.

I guess we guess our way through life
How many times do we really know for sure?
I was just hoping for the best
Then, I woke up in those loving arms of yours

And what I felt
Was unmistakable
When I fell for you...

It was real; it was magic
It was calm; it was savage
It was cool as a breeze
It was warm to the touch
It was never enough
It was always too much
It did all the things love does
And that's how I knew
It was

Who thought that I could laugh so loud
Then turn around and cry so many tears?
I used to have so many doubts
But one by one, you made them disappear

And what I found
Was unbelievable
But I believe it's true

It was real; it was magic
It was calm; it was savage
It was cool as a breeze
It was warm to the touch
It was never enough
It was always too much
It did all the things love does
And that's how I knew
It was

You asked what I felt
When you walked through the door
Was it Fear? Was it clear?
It was all that and more

It was real; it was magic
It was calm; it was savage
It was cool as a breeze
It was warm to the touch
It was never enough
It was always too much
It did all the things love does
And that's how I knew
It was

Kim walked off the stage to general applause. Her voice had cracked in some places when emotion had gotten the better of her, but she just remembered the feel of the music video and laughed at the similarity. Sitting down, Ron looked at her with his gleaming smile, which had been helped along by the use of brightening strips she had insisted on getting. "That was badical, Kim," he said, putting his arm around her.

"I wanted it to be perfect, Ron, and it so wasn't. You had to have heard my voice cracking up there. And I was so fidgety and…" She was cut off by his kiss on her cheek.

"You can't sound bad to me, Kim Possible, or haven't you learned that yet?" She just smiled sheepishly as she gave him a patented KP Kiss and sat back to listen to the next singer.
