Every day at recess, Hinata hid behind the large tree in the playground, trying to muster up the courage to talk to that nice boy with the whisker marks, Naruto, was it? He might be willing to be her friend, no one else will. But every day, just as she was about to, that pink haired girl, Sakura, walks by with her friend. And every time, Naruto stops what he's doing and stares, sometimes smiling and saying hi. And every time, Sakura ignores him.

Hinata never seemed to get Naruto's attention. It was like she was invisible to him. Was she to shy and weak?

The others just couldn't see. Of that spark of defiance in his eyes every time someone puts him down. Every time they make fun of his dream. He had the courage she lacked, to go against what the rest believed. Maybe if she was more like him, she'd get him to notice her, acknowledge her, like he wants from everyone else.

But Hinata never could be as brave as him, only watching him from a distance.

At the Chunin Exams, Hinata fiddled with the small jar of healing balm, wondering if she should give it to Naruto for his wounds. As he walked passed, she finally got the courage to do so, showing that she cared.
