Made to be broken

I followed him into the kitchen; making the excuse I was helping him with the drinks. Once there, he set about laying out glasses. I stood in silence and watched him, the man I love, the same man who could this very second, be changing or even dieing.

"Carter?" he finally stops his task and turns to me with a questioning look on his face. I suddenly feel uncomfortable and find my hands very interesting. Jack's hand is suddenly in mine, and I squeeze it tightly before idly playing with his fingers and returning to face him. I feel a prickle over my entire skin as his deep brown eyes look down on me.

"Jack, please don't die." I just blurt out, but its effect is enough. He looks away, trying to hide the expression on his face. I move my head to recapture his eye, but its no good, so I raise my hand and place it gently on his cheek, pulling him back to me. Our eyes lock, bloodshot and tear stained.

"At least promise me that you'll fight this; that you wont give up. coz I'm sure as hell not giving up on you. Not now, not ever! You hear me, so." I begin to lose my control.

"Shh." he interrupts, placing a silencing finger on my lips. "I'm not going to give up." He hesitates before going on, "not as long as I have something, someone to live for." His hand slips from mine and moves to rest on my hips, the other mimicking its partner, and he pulls me into his arms. I wrap myself around him and hold him tightly, burying my face in his neck and breathing in his essence.

After a few moments he pulls away, placing a small soft kiss on my forehead, amongst some stay hairs and rests his hand on the back of my neck. I look up and we silently agree that we'll get though this no matter what. And most importantly, we'll get though it together.

We finish making the drinks and re-enter the lounge, with a new and unbreakable bond between us. Nothing is ever going to keep me from him, and he from me, and that includes some rule in the military.
