The bathroom filled itself slowly with steam, the mirror was fogged to the point Dan was hardly able to see his own hands. He was just soaping his body and scrubbing his head, completely lost in thoughts, when he heard the floor creak in front of the bathroom door.
He snapped out of his train of whatever thoughts he had, not sure if he'd just imagined the noise. He turned off the water and listened into the silence for a while. A few moments of waiting and he decided it probably was the wind, but held his ears open for any other sounds, while he continues rubbing his scalp.
Just when he rinsed his hair he heard the door to the living room squeak, making him jump a little, which caused shampoo to splash into his eyes. Alarmed by the sound he tried to ignore the stinging pain in his right eye, turned the shower off and took his towel.
He bound it tight around his waist and slowly pulled the shower curtain to one side. He put a small step out of the warm, cozy shower, looking at the locked bathroom door. "Hello?" he shouted in the direction of the door.
Normally Dan doesn't get frightened easily, but Phil was visiting his family for the week and would come back in a few hours, which was the reason for Dan's late-night shower.
However, the scared boy decided to look around his flat, so he could go back to shower without this weird feeling. He didn't actually think there was someone in their apartment, but still he took a bottle of hairspray before entering the dark hallway. He would be able to defend himself with it or spray any molesters in their eyes.
He gripped the spray can tight with his left hand and dared a step further. The floor creaked a little under his weight, making Dan feel even more uncomfortable.
He grabbed along the wall with his right hand in order to find the switch, but stopped as he felt hands sneak around his waist. He jumped out of shock and quickly hit the invader with the spray bottle, making the stranger stumble back a few steps and letting out a mumbled swear.
Dan had reacted way too fast in his panic to realize who was standing in front of him. It was indeed no stranger.
The shocked boy's chin dropped wide open, he wasn't able to get a word through his parted lips.
The other man was rubbing his head and mumbling "surprise".
Dan was just standing there, unable to move, jaw dropped wide open. He didn't even notice it when the bottle dropped to the ground. "Phil…what the fuck" Dan ran over to his friend and hugged him tight, stuttering into his ear "oh my god I'm so sorry, I was just so scared"
Phil just put his hands around Dan, pressing him firmly against his chest and whispered "I missed you too". Dan put his hands on the taller boy's lower back and rested his head on his shoulder, smiling.
