It had been so many years since it all happened.
He fought wars, signed treaties, stayed away as much as he could to mend his broken heart, to get rid of all the painful memories, to try and begin anew by the growth of his empire. But the power, the wealth, the status was never enough to help him get over a little step he had to have forgotten long before he even set forth on his new journey.
They had even been allies through two world wars, but they remained bitter with each other, bickering and always trying to beat each other out. But after all the struggling and the fights, England grew tired of everything.
He needed a clean slate. America was an asshole, but he was still his little brother. How could he ever stay mad at him for a silly little war? He didn't want to do this anymore. He started to feel regretful for never making amends with him, never apologizing for causing America to rebel. Quite frankly, he never tried a bloody thing to fix things between the two. And that hurt. They used to be so close. He was just so emotionally wounded by his defiant attitude that he never stopped to think that America had a reason to want to separate himself from him.
They could have remained friends ('Look at Canada and France', he would think), but they were both just too headstrong.
In the end, though, England let go of his pride for one moment in his life by setting up a time and place so they could meet.
America agreed, just barely, that Central Park would be a good place.
And when they met up, England let out a breath before handing him a small bundle of roses and a small box of cookies to him.
"I would like to apologize for my never ending bitterness towards you and…I would…like for us to…start over."
America blinked a few times before taking with one hand the gifts.
"You…didn't have to bring me anything, you know?" America said.
"I know," England couldn't seem to look at him. The whole act was just embarrassing.
"Um, I brought you something, too, though," America said as he handed him a similar bundle of roses, with little box that read 'Earl Grey'.
"I never really stopped to think how selfish I was being until recently," he continued. "You just beat me to the punch."
England looked at him with curiosity.
"I'm sorry, too."
England felt a few tears form on the rims of his eyes, but told himself to keep it together and not ruin the one moment where he wasn't screwing up something that mattered.
"You're forgiven," England smiled.
America sighed. "If I had known you were going to bring me something, I would have made you come to my house. Now everyone's looking at us because of the flowers."
"Complaining already?" England asked. He was not amused by that at all.
"You're pointing things out already," America shot back.
"I offered to start over, not to change my way of being," England said as he began to walk.
'Hopefully, this is something I won't regret,' America thought as he caught up to him.
A/N: I blame Pink for her song Just Give Me A Reason for this. That chorus never left me alone. And I was bored, so I wrote. But I didn't feel like writing FrUK. So I did my England and America brOTP piece. And now I want to cry. ;u; Handle the ending however you may.
Another thing, I thought that after a few centuries of being at odds with each other, they would bring a little gift to soften up the moment and show some appreciation for the other. And I researched the national flowers of USA and England and America's is the rose, while England's is the tudor rose.
I hope you all enjoyed!
