A/N: ene I'm alive... I swear I am. It's just work and writer's block are my enemies and they've been winning.. so yeah.

She gripped the thin sheets tightly in her hands, her knuckles turning pure white to match her face; pale with apprehension.

It wasn't supposed to be like this; quite the contrary… shouldn't she be the one lying there, waiting to die? At least, she wished it was like that.

Her eyes stung like salt in a wound from lack of sleep, and she could hardly think straight let alone stand.

Hell, everything ached like she had been thrown under a bus or a rampaging herd of cattle.

She swallowed the sand in her mouth, attempting to lick her chapped lips with a dry tongue. Her brow was furrowed, let alone dampened with sweat. She could only wring her calloused hands together in contemplation and agony, waiting silently.

Her condition wasn't getting any better, nor did the doctors expect her to wake from this slumber she was cast into.

That very thought sent her heart into the razor-wire surrounding it. Muscle constricting on her lungs to the point she could hardly breathe and her stomach plummeting through the floor.

She already knew her comrade wouldn't wake up. She'd be a fool to think otherwise.

But then a few improvements had taken place in the girl's condition, and yet that was a few months ago…

She was still as comatose as ever.

The Bounty Huntress was always by her side none-the-less, and only the Angel could drag her away for some sleep every-so-often with a few reassuring words. They both knew better than to believe them.

And one day when she had been woken by the Angel in an ecstatic burst, she had been told the Princess had woken up, and she couldn't help but feel her heart leap into her throat and choke her on her own words, but she hopped out of bed and sprinted down the hall as fast as her tired limbs could carry her, regardless of her tank top and underwear being flashed to all who passed her by.

"Zelda…." The Huntress had been flashed a warm but weak smile. The Princess was pale and still sick looking, but she couldn't help but scoop her up in her arms and hold her tight and just weep into her exposed shoulder that her hospital gown had slid off of.

After that everyone had been so happy for a few days, but none more than Samus, of course, until then…

Pit had been the first to tell her that Zelda- the Princess's health had begun to deteriorate rapidly in a downward spiral. Almost like running down a staircase, but ten times faster.

For once in her life, she felt more than just dead.

She had held the hand of her lover since then, faking a warm smile, even though she knew the Princess could see right through it. She was just too smart for her own good sometimes…

The monitor gave a slowed beep, then another… and another… all in lengthier intervals…

"Samus…?"

The Huntress looked up with tear filled eyes, smiling bitterly.

"Yes?"

"I'm tired… will you lull me to sleep?"

Samus nodded shakily, shushing while she gently pet the female's head.

"I love you, my Princess…"

Zelda smiled, nodding. "I love you too…"

Her eyes fluttered closed as did the monitor. It gave a long droning and Samus held back a small whimper, smiling slightly.

She pulled out a small ring from her pants pocket, placing it on the other girl's hand.

"Happy Anniversary…"
