"Liv, come on baby. You have to go to work with mama for a while. Luke will pick you up in a little bit. Olivia Jayne Hughes came running out of her room with her wild curls flowing, her big green eyes shining, and her giggles filling the air. For a four-year-old she was intelligent. She sat on the couch so her mom could help with her sandals. She was wearing her favorite purple dress and she was happy to finally be able to see where her mama worked.
When Vic walked into work with Olivia in tow, the first thing she did was smile at her gaping co-workers before heading to their captain's office. She may have never mentioned she had a daughter because she didn't want to answer the questions she knew she'd be asked by her team.
"Captain." She said softly as she walked in and Olivia hid behind her legs when she saw the tall man.
"Yes Hughes?" Sullivan asked looking up.
"I am requesting desk and cleaning duties for the day. My sitter cancelled and until Luke can pick my daughter up, in an hour or so I have Olivia here with me." She replied nervously.
"Under normal circumstance I wouldn't do this, and it is a one-time thing, but your request is granted. Just do your best to keep her with you, so she doesn't get hurt and for cripes sake tell the others before they explode." He replied softly and waved at a grinning Olivia.
"Yes sir, thank you sir. It won't happen again." She was glad she came into work in her uniform today. She noticed her teammates had gone up to the beanery after Sullivan's remark. She knew they'd heard everything. She knew this was going to be hard. She carried Liv's things up the stairs with her following close behind. She put their stuff into her locker before picking Liv up and carrying her into the beanery.
"Mama, do you really get to work here every day?" Liv asked.
"Yep, you ready to meet mama's friends?" Vic asked as she stopped just inside the beanery and Liv nodded.
"Vic why didn't you tell us you had such a beautiful little angel?" Miller asked, already smitten with the cheeky grin on Liv's face.
"Honestly?" She asked them and they nodded. She sat in her usual spot with her daughter on her lap.
"Because I don't want to answer the baby daddy questions. I love my little girl, believe me, I do but her father is nothing but a cowardice sperm donor who got off on r-a-p-i-n-g me." Vic replied and they all smiled at her sadly.
"She looks just like you. Obviously, she's much quieter though." Travis smirked.
"Yeah right. She's just shy around new people. Thank God she's on her best behavior for mama though." Vic smiled.
"Mama, what's their names?" Liv whispered.
"Well, that's Mr. Travis, Mr. Dean, Mr. Jack, Mr. Ben, Ms. Maya, and Ms. Andy." Vic smiled as she pointed each of them out." Liv nodded.
"Hi. I'm Olivia." She said sweetly. She grinned and knew she was wrapping each of them around her little finger, and quickly. They waved. After breakfast, Vic brought Liv back downstairs to sit at the desk.
"Mama." Olivia whined, her hands on her hips and her Hughes attitude clearly showing.
"Yes little love?" Vic asked.
"Can I please go down the pole? Just one time." Vic sighed.
"I think she's earned a turn on the pole, she's been so well-behaved this morning, after all." Sullivan boomed coming up beside them. Vic mouthed a 'thank you' and Olivia hugged his legs.
"Thank you, mister Captain. I have been on my bestest manners just like mama taught me." Vic chuckled and got up to take Olivia to the pole. Travis grinned at Vic.
"You're welcome, Olivia." He replied.
"Liv, why don't you go up with Mr. Trav—"
"Uncle Travis." He interrupted.
"Uncle Travis and mama will stay down here to catch you, okay?" Vic smiled and Liv nodded, her curls bouncing all over the place. She took Travis' hand and walked up the pole with him. She patiently listened and watched as he showed her how to go down the pole and she grasped it just like he showed her before sliding down into her mother's waiting arms. The others watched, took pictures and then gave her a bunch of high-fives before going to do their chores. Liv was given a VIP tour of every inch of the station, trucks, and aid car before Luke showed up.
"Chief, can I help you?" Miller asked as he was the first who spotted him. They shook hands.
"Yes, can you point me to Victoria and Olivia?" He asked before realizing that he probably had no idea that he and Vic were seeing each other, because although they were cleared by HR, they had yet to tell the team. Miller looked at him in shock, put two and two together and suddenly his eyes glared into him.
"Luke!" Liv said running into his arms as he bent down to catch her.
"Hey baby. Did you have fun with mama?" He asked ignoring Miller's glare. She nodded.
"I got to go down the pole, because mister Captain thought I was being a really good girl." She beamed and he smiled.
"Well, I am proud of you for being a good girl." Luke replied.
"Luke, were in the beanery, Miller drop it and come up here so we can explain." Vic called out and they made their way upstairs. Luke still holding Olivia stood next to Vic.
"Okay, first and foremost, Lucas—Chief Ripley, did nothing to force or coerce me into anything. If anything it was the other way around. You all will have opinions and I understand that. I also understand that you only want to watch out for me and probably Liv, now. But he treats her like his own and I am head-over-heels in love with him. HR knows and has cleared us to be in a relationship and I honestly don't care about any negative opinions you may have. I am a grown adult and so is he. Also, I know I may seem hypocritical in this situation, and Jack and Andy, I should have said this a long time ago. But I am sorry for how I reacted all those months ago. It was childish, petulant, and rude, and I'm sorry." Luke glanced at her.
"Don't worry about it, you don't need to know." Vic said this time directing her speech at him. He nodded.
"Thank you for apologizing, but we get it." Andy said with a smile on her face and Vic nodded.
"Look as long as this is consensual on both parts, which you have made clear that it is, all I can say is that it's weird and it will take some time to get used to, but I support you." Maya smiled. Ben nodded.
"I agree. Although, I can't really say anything. That's how Miranda and I started out too." He smiled and Vic grinned. This was going better than she thought. Jack and Travis had already told her how they felt. They nodded and Travis gave her a thumbs up.
"Dean?" She asked.
"Look, I'm happy for you, but I am in shock. Who taught you how to keep a secret?" He joked.
"Har har. Very funny." Vic replied sticking her tongue out.
"That's mature Victoria." Luke smiled and dodged her playful smack.
"Yeah, yeah. I'll get her bag. Think you can handle them for a minute?" She teased and he nodded.
"Liv will protect me." He teased back and she laughed.
"Also, all of you, can call me Lucas or just Ripley outside of work." He added.
"Is it alright if we work our way there? It's a little weird, sir." He nodded.
"Whatever you prefer, Luke or Rip is fine too." He replied.
"Luke, can we get ice cream on the way home?" Olivia asked and he looked down at her.
"You gotta ask mama, first." He replied and she sighed before stomping lightly off to find her mother. When she rounded a corner she smiled when Vic picked her up.
"Wow she really is mini-Vic." Maya laughed.
"I heard that, but yeah she is. You can get ice cream if you're up for it, but don't let her go crazy or she'll be up all night and, don't let her trick you out of naptime." Vic reminded him before he nodded and kissed her softly before taking Olivia and her bag form her.
"You got it. See you later, love." He smiled as Liv hugged her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"Bye baby." Vic called.
"Bye mama." Liv called back.
