Starless Night

By Lily Maxwell

Looking up at the face that tries to hide behind black bangs, Miharu wonders if Yoite can dream.

The lights of the train flicker for a moment. Miharu looks down at his hands.

Dreams are linked to wishes, Miharu thinks. Wishes that we didn't even know we wished. Wishes that we wanted so hard, that we couldn't begin to think about something else.

His hands, he notices, are cold.

Dreams are linked to wishes that come from experiences we had in the past, and the ones yet to happen in life. The remembrance of joy, and one wanting to feel it again. Or a wound so painful, that one would never want to feel again.

Raising his eyes again, Miharu glimpses through the window. The night sky, so dark, doesn't hold a single star.

His life has never been out of the ordinary. He figured that if there were things in his past that he couldn't remember, then they weren't supposed to be remembered. And he felt that if looking at the past was meaningless, why should the future hold any deeper meaning?

Shinrabanshou doesn't make this night any warmer.

Yoite had a past. He shared his deepest wish, he forced his way into his life, and his eyes, so determinate, swore him a pledge. Yoite had been honest with him. Omitting his past wasn't the same as lying. Not knowing didn't make him any more distant than when he sat down on the floor, his knees brought up to his chest, his eyes hidden from all light. Pity, they were beautiful eyes.

Yoite's head falls on top of his. Miharu thinks it's better to adjust himself in his seat so that it lies on his shoulder instead. His hair is soft against his cheek – his hat is being held in his gloved hands.

Miharu wonders what it would be like to have Izuna Shingan and see Yoite's heart. Yoite didn't talk about his past. Miharu didn't mind. He wanted, however, to know how he could be able to understand him a little better.

He wanted Yoite to understand him a little better.

Miharu closes his eyes. He leans his head against the one that doesn't like being touched. When Yoite wakes up, he's going to be angry. Miharu secretly hopes that he doesn't mind.

The lights of the train flicker for a moment. Miharu falls asleep, wondering if he can dream.
