This Moment
The firelight was almost out; Jack knew Ennis was adamant about staying with the sheep tonight, something about doing the job he was paid to do. Jack just thought he was being pigheaded, he had a feeling Auguire would yanking them down early as it was. His tone wasn't too friendly when they spoke some two weeks ago, but Auguire was an old stick in the mud anyway. Jack brought the harmonica to his lips at least he could play without Ennis hassling about it.
"I thought I told you not to play that thing anymore."
"Ennis? I thought you was staying with the sheep tonight."
"Sheep sound asleep and Totter got a good eye on them anyway."
"Why you come back?"
"For the whiskey, course." He motioned to the bottle Jack held in his hands. Jack held it out to him as Ennis took a seat next to t he dying fire. Their hands brushed and Jack sucked in a breath, why was it that Ennis made him feel this way? Why didn't he crave a woman's touch? Ennis cast a sideways look at him as he took a swig of whiskey, he looked like an angel really in the glow of the fire, an angle that had turned Jack's whole world upside down.
"Ennis?"
"Yeah?"
"You doing this next summer?"
"Me and Alma are getting married." He was not sure if he said it to show Jack he wasn't no queer or to convince himself that he was still tied to Alma.
"I might if Auguire will let me."
"What if you don't, rodeo?"
"Can't hardly afford it."
"That's why I don't." Ennis snorted. Jack wondered why Ennis was making their last moments together hardly bearable. He knew Ennis would marry Alma, kept preaching he wasn't no queer, but right now they were still on Brokeback and Ennis was all his.
"Will you forget me Ennis del Mar when this is all over?" Ennis turned to face him a frown upon his lips.
"You'll be a dammed hard man to forget Jack Twist." Jack felt a small smile twist at his lips as he leaned closer to Ennis.
"I don't want you to ever forget me cowboy." He whispered breathily in Ennis's ear. Ennis tensed up, but relaxed at Jack's words scooting closer to the soft touch.
"You better never forget me either Jack fucking Twist."
"Never." The kiss that followed was different from any others they ever shared, this one held emotions neither man wanted to put in words so they poured it into this kiss as they last of the fire burnt away. They did not feel the cold wind though, because they were creating heat between them as Ennis pushed Jack to the dirt. They had to make this moment last, to hold onto each other as long as they could because who knows when they would meet again, if they ever would.
Later when they lay tangled in the tent and Jack was nestled against his chest Ennis ran his hands through the jet black hair.
"Ain't never gonna forget you darlin' you're too special." He then kissed Jack's forehead gently. Ennis closed his eyes and let himself keep a picture of Jack in his mind, a memory that would never fade away.
