Whisper

By Lily Maxwell

Miharu laughed. Not one of those long, spirited laughs. But a short laugh, between a chuckle and a giggle.

Yoite didn't know how to react. The sound was foreign to him, as it was unexpected. His deteriorated hearing made it all seem worse, somehow. The only distinct sound was of his own heartbeats. They seemed so loud.

His eyes, they moved left and right, not knowing where to focus their attention. But Miharu, oh Miharu. He brought his hands to his face, a gesture now so familiar, he didn't pull away. Miharu's eyes pleaded his to look at them, even if he really didn't want to.

"Yoite."

The anticipation made him sick.

"Yoite is Yoite. Nothing is going to change that."

If he could scream, this would be the time. He wanted to yell how that was a lie. How could Yoite mean anything in the first place? He wanted to pull away. He wanted… He wanted…

Coming from Miharu, the words seemed so sincere.

"Yoite…"

Those gentle fingers wiped away the tears he hadn't noticed had started to fall. He couldn't scream. He couldn't yell out, or pull away.

"Idiot."

The word was said with no malice. The hug that came next should have been unexpected, but it actually wasn't. Yet, he couldn't bring himself to return it. He simply rested his head on Miharu's shoulder, his arms remaining by his sides.

"You can trust me on this."

Miharu had no idea that all the trust he could muster for a single person was already on him. Unable to perform any of the actions he wanted, he simply remained there, unmoving, as if asleep, in his arms.

"There's nothing in this world that could make me forsake you now."

And even if it was whispered, it made him want to clench his heart. Miharu had no idea that aside from Shinrabanshou, he also held another quite strong power.

Yoite didn't think anything else in the world could have as much influence on him as his words.
