That is a really pretty dress.

Caroline has been looking at it for a few minutes now. She likes the yellow color, it would look wonderful on her.

She doesn't need to see the price tag to know that she can't afford it though. Of course she could compel the saleswoman, but that would be stealing and she's not into that. Besides, her mom would immediatly notice such a pretty dress and would ask Caroline how she paid for it.

It's a pity though, because she has shoes that match that dress perfectly. Expensive shoes that she bought a while ago and never wore because...well, she didn't have the right dress to go with it.

She sighs and can't help but wonder about the look on Stefan's face if he saw her in that dress.

"Hey."

As if by magic, he's suddenly standing next to her.

She smiles. "Hey."

"Doing some shopping? That's a very pretty dress," he says.

Ha! She knew he would like it. Too bad he'll never see it on her.

"Um, no. I'm meeting Tyler at the Grill."

Is it her or doesn't he seem too happy about that?

"Ok, enjoy your evening, then." He walks away, before turning around.

"Care?"

"Yes?"

"Be careful with Tyler. Please?"

She doesn't know where that come from, but she's happy that he cares, so she just nods with a smile.

Later that evening, when Caroline comes home, there's a package on the kitchen table. She opens it and inside is the yellow dress, neatly folded. She takes the small envelope lying on it and read the note.

That dress was made for you. S.

The brightness of her smile outshines the luminous color of the dress.

It's the annual Lockwood Barbeque, and the perfect opportunity for Caroline to wear the dress.

When she arrives at the Lockwood mansion that night, she feels confident and happy. Those are emotions she's not used to feel, and certainly not at the same time.

She sees her group of friends and wait for Stefan to turn around, as if sensing that she has arrive before anyone else notice.

And that's exactly what he does.

When she sees the look in his eyes, Caroline Forbes knows that her days as second best are definitely over.
