Two kids that live across the street
Their paths constantly meet
Whether it be at school or at home
Neither can have a moment alone
While they might not be in the same room
The thoughts of the other create a sense of gloom
For as time goes by changes occur
While you may have liked hate, love might be what you prefer
For as the years flew by and the changes progressed
They realized that they liked each other best
Thoughts of pranks and jokes went away
Thoughts of love and kissing were here to stay
A part of them refused to give
A small denial inside them still lived
While there was no doubt that they were in love
They thought it was best to push and shove
They went back to their old state
Not one of love but one of hate
They put off telling their feelings for another day
They said this each day as the weeks flew away
Weeks turned to months and months into years
They went to bed each night their eyes full of tears
At eighteen the time came at last
The boy ran to the girl's house very fast
He knocked on her door, sick of the tears
For the time was now for him to conquer his fears
She opened the door and let him in
He sat down thinking that their future would begin
As he fell to one knee he took out a ring
Not knowing the heartbreak that this would bring
The girl had not known this was his intent
The night with another man she had spent
Jimmy looked up and saw his face
Another man had taken his place
His worst fears had now been confirmed
From this a powerful lesson he had learned
As more time flew by her new man did the same thing
He went down on one knee and took out a ring
The date was set for Christmas Day
A snowy wedding and an open sleigh
It was too much for him to bear
Jimmy had to get out of there
His one true love was what he had lost
The ring he had tried to give her he did toss
He packed his things and moved away
There were too many memories for him to stay
He tried to be happy but the feeling couldn't last
He was trapped inside his horrendous past
He had been too scared of rejection and pain
He hadn't thought of what he could gain
Though being rejected might have stung
He would have moved on and happiness would have come
But since he had never taken that chance
Never asked her to a single dance
He would spend the rest of his life asking What if?
Full of regret because of this
Take the chance and spill your heart
A new life together you may start
If she turns you down what have you lost
A moment of time is all that it cost
But if you don't take the chance and follow your heart
You'll spend the rest of your life tearing yourself apart
For being rejected or getting into a tiff
Is always better than wondering "what if"
