Title: The First Sunset
Genre: General/Romance

Disclaimer: I wish I could own Fullmetal Alchemist, but I don't.

The First Sunset

Edward often wondered how he had been able to cope without Roy when he was younger.

Ever since he met Roy, this person had become an important part of his life.

When he went on missions, he missed Roy terribly.

He always felt joyful when he returned from his missions and saw Roy again.

But he never let his gladness show. He hid it under a mask of hatred, for he was afraid what would happen if people found out.

He would look at Roy's lazy, smug face as he read his report. He would watch Roy's trademark smirk form on his lips.

Even though he found Roy's expression annoying, he couldn't help but feel that Roy was quite handsome.

Deep inside him, he was smiling, but he glared at Roy on the outside.

Yet he found it getting harder and harder to keep up his pretence as time passed by.

Finally, something inside him let go, and he decided to tell Roy.

That day was a very special day indeed. It was the day of the battle between the two famous State Alchemists, Flame and Fullmetal.

The battle was not as successful as Ed had hoped it to be, but what mattered most was that he did manage to get the information he wanted, even though the result was a draw.

The worst part was that Ed and Roy were given the responsibility clear up the grounds after their battle, for they had done great damage to the battle grounds.

As they sat there under the setting sun, taking a rest before carrying on with their task, Ed chose this moment to confess his feelings for Roy.

"Um... Colonel," he mumbled in a low voice, so softly that Roy did not hear him.

"Roy," he said, a little louder this time.

Hearing his first name caught Roy's attention. He turned and looked at Ed.

"I love you, Roy." The four words came out in a rush without any pause between them, and while he spoke, Ed was staring at the ground, wishing it would swallow him up. He wasn't sure how Roy would react. Would he be angry? Would he laugh at him, thinking it was a joke? Would he...

But Roy's reaction was what he had expected least.

He leaned in, and kissed Ed gently on his cheek.

Ed lifted his head, surprised, but at the same time, an incredible warmth was filling him up.

"I love you too, Ed."

And that was how the relationship between Edward Elric and Roy Mustang began, under the glowing brightness of the setting sun.

It was the first sunset they saw together.

A/N: I originally intended to write a sequel for Setting Sun, but suddenly this idea came to me and I did a prequel instead. I guess I'll have to work on the sequel some time later. If you haven't read Setting Sun yet, go and read it please! Thanks! Please read & review.
