AN: Kay, so this is my very first fanfic for Artemis Fowl. Artemis' speech just kind of started writing itself in my head after I read this passage from The Lost Colony on page 96. "Holly glanced sideways at Artemis, who was studying the stage through a pair of opera glasses. She would never tell him, but if a human had to be involved with saving the fairy People, then Artemis was probably the best man, or boy, for the job." Internet reviews are one of the best inventions in the history of man, so they are, of course, welcome.
Disclaimer: Man, I can't wait for the new Harry Potter movie this summer! It's gonna be soooo good! And I can't wait to see how they-
Oh, I'm supposed to disclaim here? Um….booooring. Ouch! Geez, you're harshing my mellow. *pales* Get sued? *eyes go wide* For actual money? Okay, okay,-Ah! No need to be violent! I'm doing it right now!
I do not, in any way, profit from this story and all creative rights to the characters belong to the spectacular Eoin Colfer.
(you're very mean to me you know)
Butler wasn't nervous, he was just extremely alert. You know, even more alert than usual. It was kind of surprising that this was even possible, given the thorough wear and tear his nerves had sustained over the years. But he was so sure that this job would end badly that he couldn't help but be edgy. Naturally he had faith in Artemis' eloquence and persuasiveness, but this particular venture…a lot could go wrong. He sighed. The second the government entered the equation things just became that much harder. He checked his watch again. Shot a glance at Artemis.
Artemis knew what the look meant, of course. He sighed and looked at his bodyguard with a long suffering air. He lifted up his pant leg an inch to reassure Butler that the brand new Neutrino handgun was still strapped tight to his ankle. It was completely unnecessary. They were meeting with the UN for heaven's sake. Some of the most powerful people in the world, but still. No one knew what this meeting was about, not even them.
One minute till. "Are you ready?" Artemis' question reverberated through the stale air. Nothing but silence. He could almost feel the eyes rolling behind him. He gave a slight smile. Fine. He took two steps forward and abruptly swung open the ornate wood doors, entering the conference room that had been the focus of more television cameras than Times Square on New Year's Eve. The doors drifted back closed until Butler caught them. He waited one more second, and then closed them slowly. He took up a post at the front of the room while Artemis sat opposite . "Hello. My name is Artemis Fowl." Gentle laughter warmed the room. Who didn't know that name or face? His reputation was why they were all here.
"I have asked you here today to discuss an enterprise of a purely diplomatic nature. I hope you will not persecute me as a traitor when I tell you I have known about this matter for some time, and trust me when I say that this information is extremely delicate as well as extremely dangerous in the wrong hands." A nervous murmur spread throughout the room. Artemis got on with it.
"I have discovered a…civilization. The People are interested in establishing peaceful relations with all governments of the world. I am their chosen representative simply because I was the first to make contact. I can assure you that it isn't in response to my previous, rather questionable enterprises. The mistakes of my past have not been confined to the human race alone." A bigger murmur, now, as well as alarmed glances flicking across the table to refocus on him.
"They are among us now, unarmed. Would you like to meet them?"
