Enough

Rukia hadn't been sure what Ichigo was planning until he slowly led her into his room that day and got down on one knee, velvet box in hand. He flipped open the small, black lid, revealing a sparkling clear diamond ring.

Good thing Ichigo had practiced his lines beforehand; he may seem confident on the battlefield, but when it comes to love, he's still just an amateur. "Kuchiki Rukia, I need you to answer me, just this once." He took in a long, uneasy breath, and asked, "Will you marry me?"

Shock paralyzed her senses momentarily, before her mind began to work again. It raced with excuses for both replies—yes or no.

Her rationality told her it was a ridiculous idea.

It was utterly absurd, crazy—irresponsible, as her brother would say—to even think about accepting the offer. She couldn't stay with him. She'd have to leave someday. If she continued to put down roots in this town—in this world—she would surely pay dearly for it later.

But, as much as all these reasons made sense in Rukia's head, they were silenced by a much stronger longing; the desire to say yes.

So what if they couldn't stay together? Who cares if she had to leave someday? Why did she have to think about all that now? Why should any of it affect her decision? There's only so far you can go if you keep looking ahead towards the future and never see what's right in front you, here in the moment.

So maybe they didn't have a future planned out ahead of them.

But maybe that was okay. Maybe one moment would be enough. For now.

That's why, just this once, she listened to her heart and took a chance.

"Yes. I'll marry you, Kurosaki Ichigo."
