"A stunner?" That was Sirius's second to last thought as he was hit by the red flash while he was dueling Bellatrix. "Maybe she remembered she was fighting the head of the fami- bloody, buggering hell!"

Death in this manner should have probably been painless, but since Sirius was alive when he fell in, the forcible separation of his soul from his living body caused an instant of almost unbearable pain.

"I told you we should have talked to Severus when he wrote to us. At least he knew how to survive," a feminine voice said as Sirius regained whatever version of consciousness this was.

"Lils, how could you say that? Snivellus has been treating Harry like crap as long as he's known him," a very familiar voice said.

"And yet, he's been more present in his life and tried harder to keep him safe than this, this, ooh, I don't even know what to say!"

"I'm sorry, Lily. I should have been like you and James and thought of Harry first, but all I could think was I lost my best friends, my family; so I failed as a godfather," Sirius said.

"Nice of you to realize that NOW, Pads," Lily said, shaking her head. "It took you falling through the Veil of Death alive to get you to grow up."

Sirius nodded sadly, bowing his head, thinking he would be alone for eternity, when he realized he was engulfed in a hug from the people he considered his siblings.

"Um, how can I feel you hugging me?" he asked.

"You fall through the Veil of Death, you see us, and that is the first thing you ask?" James replied, incredulously.

"Well, yeah. I haven't been hugged by anyone since you guys died," he said. "Oh, bugger. Why didn't I fight Dumbledore for him, why?"

"We will do our best to make sure he gets there, Pads, we will."

Sirius let the only family that ever meant anything to him lead him farther into paradise, his happiness marred only by the thought that this bliss was caused by failing his godson.
