Alternate Ending
As Rory stared out the window of the Greyhound bus the campaign staff was traveling on she began to wonder if this is really what she wanted. She missed her mom, she missed Logan, and for whatever odd reason that she couldn't quite name, she missed hearing Paris tell her all of the things she needed to do and panic over nothing. She felt out of touch with what her life had been and she longed for some sort of stability. As much as she loved her job, it wasn't quite what she had expected.
The campaign tour stopped in Philadelphia for Barack Obama to give a speech, and as they arrived she saw a poster for an event at the publishing group Jess worked for. She felt drawn to it. When she walked in, she saw him and she realized what was missing in her life the past few months. She missed reading books and she missed talking about books, but most importantly, she missed having someone around who always surprised her. Jess had grown up a lot in the past few years, and looking at him on the other side of the room she realized she was ready for him. She was ready to be with him, for real. She could work in a place where she got paid to read and decide what books would have an influence on kids who had been like her.
She was ready to say it all, but when she crossed the room and reached him, the words wouldn't come. She couldn't make herself say it. She knew it was what she wanted, but she was still afraid. Afraid that she was running away from the failure of being with Logan and afraid that Lorelai wouldn't understand. Jess, in his usual way, saw right through her. Before she could say anything he told her he'd missed her and how happy he was to see her. He told her about the wonderful books he'd been reading and how much he knew she would love Philly if she stayed. She smiled, finally feeling like she found the place she belonged.
It was weird, thinking back on it. Who would have thought that Mitchum Huntzberger had been right, at least a little right. She didn't have what it took to be a journalist. Not that she wasn't qualified, anyone who knew Rory knew she would be great at anything. There was something greater out there for her though. Reading had always been her favorite hobby, and she finally figured out that publishing and Jess were the two things that made her life complete.
