Just a Lily Thing

Sometimes, James doesn't understand why he's caught up on Lily Evans, usually, it's right after Sirius asks why, and he tries to explain it to him.

"Oi Evans! Go out with me?" James asks, hopefully as usual.

"In your dreams, Potter." She snapped back at him. Before she turned around and stormed down the hallway.

That was the first reason she didn't react like any other girl, she didn't want an arrogant prick, she wanted the real James, the James he couldn't show anyone else, except maybe Sirius, very, very occasionally, whilst drunk.

James strolled down the hallway, taking as long as possible to get to Potions. When she heard sobbing from the girls bathroom.

"It's going to be okay," said a familiar voice, Lily's. James knew he shouldn't be listening, but stopped and put his ear to the door.

"Listen, I know it seems bad now, but he didn't deserve you, he was a prick," Lily continued to say to the sobbing girl.

That was the second reason, she was single-handedly the most compassionate, tolerant person James knew, except to him of course. That and the way she sometimes had that fire in her, like when they were fighting, or, when she gave a teacher some cheeky response. It was intoxicating. She had the perfect balance of emotions. She was too good for him it that aspect, James supposed, but still…

The third reason was, that whenever he looked in her eyes, he knew, that she was, you know, the one, those perfect green orbs, reflecting back anger, or even sometimes filled with tears at something he'd said, like book of her emotions. He could read Lily like a book with just one look in those eyes.

That's why Sirius couldn't understand it, really, he understands wanting a girl for her looks, or because she doesn't want you, or even, yes, he even understood the whole attractive personality thing, but the whole 'Love at First Sight' thing, went straight over his head. Maybe it hadn't been love at first sight strictly, they were only eleven back then, but James knew, as soon as she entered his compartment on the Hogwarts express in first year, that there was something there.

So, this Year he was going to start fresh-ish, he had been given Head Boy, god knows why, but he figured he only had another year, so it was time to stop that arrogant, immature prick she didn't like, and be someone she did. It was time to be the real James.

But who was that, exactly?
