There was dust all around her as she opened her eyes, the mere human vision she possessed finding it hard to see through it. She blinked a few times, but still couldn't make any sense of her surroundings. So muddled…her memories, and everything around her. She didn't understand. There was a sharp pain in her head, in her stomach…everywhere. But she had to get up, had to look…what she was looking for she couldn't remember, but she knew something very bad had happened.
What was it? She coughed as she sat up, the pain in her body making her eyes tear up. She looked around her, blinked more, trying to get away from the shield of dust, as well as the fuss around her brain, making it harder and harder to concentrate.
And suddenly she remembered. The Maru. She'd been there, with him, and…she hadn't told him. It was hitting her like a flash and the memories almost hurt. She was going to tell him…tell him she loved him. How many times she'd dreamt of him, only to wake up alone. But he'd been distant, and she wasn't sure if she was imagining it or if he was actually avoiding her. So she'd put it off…more and more, until their away mission was almost finished, and she knew…if she didn't tell him then, she never would.
She was going to tell him…the words were on her tongue…and something had happened. She couldn't remember what. It had all gone so fast…they'd been standing there, facing each other and then, suddenly, without warning…she clenched her eyes shut trying to remember, before she realised…she hadn't heard from him. He had to be there somewhere.
She crawled through the mess that the ship had made. It seemed to have fallen apart, but unlike she normally would, she didn't care. She had to find him. It meant so much more now…she hadn't told him. She was meant to tell him, she did know that much.
And then she found him. Slumped on the floor of the cockpit, his body bent at an unnatural angle. There was so much blood, and immediately she knew.
And she cried, for what would never be.
