"Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared 'neath the stars alone
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye
"

"Want to dance Olivia?"

Olivia's eyes cast a glance towards his for a moment. Confusion was the only thing that showed in them at the moment. "Dance?" she questioned. This wasn't why she had come to his apartment. She needed to say good-bye before she went to Oregon for her assignment.

He could only smile at her confusion. "Yeah, dance," he replied.

Olivia studied his face. They were standing up on the roof of his apartment, at midnight, and he wanted to dance? That had to be one of the stranger things she'd had him suggest to her before. "You're kidding, aren't you?"

"No," was his simple reply. Short and sweet as usual. Another smile graced his lips though.

Olivia's face contorted a bit, and she wasn't sure how to react to the idea of dancing with him. "It's a little late for dancing..." she stated bluntly.

He shook his head with a thoughtful look. "If you don't want to, just say so."

"I didn't say that," Olivia defended quickly in return.

Another smile engraved its way across his face. "Then you do want to dance."

Olivia looked a little agitated. "I didn't say that either."

"Well then," he said with a shrug. "What do you want to say to that?" he asked her thoughtfully.

"Munch..." Olivia warned.

John Munch could only smile a little bit wider. "Come on. One dance Olivia," he said to her, holding his hand out for her to place hers in.

Olivia's eyes glanced down at John's hand. After a minute of silent debating she placed her hand in his. "One dance…" she repeated quietly.

John nodded with a smile and pulled Olivia closer to him, placing his hands to rest gently on her waist.

"I really need to tell you something though John…" Olivia stated quietly as her head rested cautiously on John's shoulder. She wasn't used to calling him just John. But she supposed it showed him that she was serious about needing to tell him something.

John nodded a bit as they swayed to no music. "I know," he replied.

A couple minutes later Olivia lifted her head from John's shoulder and looked at his face. She placed a light kiss on his cheek. "I have to leave."

John looked confused. "But I thought you needed to tell me something," he stated in his confusion.

"I know," Olivia replied. "I just told you…" she said quietly before walking away and going down the stairs of his building to leave. She only wished she knew how long it would be before she returned.

If John had known what she meant when she said she had to leave, maybe he would have urged her to stay longer. To not go. But he didn't. And he didn't fully understand until the next morning when he got into work. And when she wasn't there, along with all her stuff.

"And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
"
