She walked back to the kitchen table with two coffees and the Daily Planet paper wedged between her arm. She slid the coffee over to Martha and they both glanced at the paper as she layed it out between them. 'Superman Saves the Day, by Lois Lane' the headline read.
"The article is perfect Lois." Said Martha.
She smiled, "It wasn't hard to write at all... you know, when I saw Clark outside that plane it was like everything I had ever been through in my life was to bring me to that one moment; and it just fell into place."
Martha nodded her head in understanding, "You and Clark have been through a lot, and it won't be easy but I've never believed in two people more than I do with you both."
She stayed silent for a moment, reflecting on the past, "Did you ever think... you know back then that Clark and I would ever... be here, like this?"
Martha answered immediately, almost as if she knew she would be asked this question one day, "I always saw the spark between you and Clark, Lois; but it was Jonathon who pointed out to me that something was bound to happen."
She couldn't help the smile that graced her lips.
"He always said that you reminded him of someone."
She was intrigued, who could it possibly be? "Really? Who?"
Martha reached toward her hand towards her and firmly grasped her hand, "Me."
She smiled and felt the familiar burning of tears in her eyes, "You know, I miss him a lot. He was there for me more than my father ever was."
Martha kept her hand on her, "Jonathan had an open heart, and he loved a lot of people; but he never really let people close to his family. His first priority was to keep Clark safe, and he was an excellent judge of character. I guess what I'm trying to say is, the moment you came into our lives he never really put those walls up to protect us from you; it was like he knew what you would one day come to mean to Clark. He always thought of you as a daughter Lois, just like I did, just as I do."
She quickly wiped the few tears that made it down her face and reached to give Martha a hug, "Thank you. You will never know how much that means to me."
Martha hugged her back tight, "I couldn't ask for a better person to marry my son. You inspire him, guide him and ground him. I'll never be able to thank you enough for barging into our lives the way you did all those years ago."
They both laughing through the happy tears, "Anytime... mom."
