"Thanks for your help, ma'am," the handsome FBI agent bid her in farewell.

"Sorry I couldn't be more help," she smiled.

She closed the door, her pulse pounding so hard in her temples she thought her head might explode. Trying not to hyperventilate, she climbed the stairs on alien, traitorous legs that wouldn't stop shaking.

She bolted the bathroom door behind her, filled the tub to near overflowing, and sank into the calming water with a shaky sigh of relief.

She hadn't taken a soul in centuries.

"He's not come for me," she tried to reassure herself, weeping briny tears.

Families are such delicate things, with so many personalities and agendas to keep in check, she thought. When they're as large and diverse as hers it was inevitable they'd have their differences, but today was a special day. They'd all made the effort to come to see her and get along. Past disagreements were just water under the bridge.

Each of her children was special to her; she had no favorites, all were loved.

"Happy Mother's day!" they called, with shy, unfamiliar smiles on their fierce faces.

"Remember, Mother loves you. You all make me so very proud," Eve smiled.
