Lord only knew how it had happened. One minute they were fighting side by side, the next Spock was on the ground with green blood seeping into his shirt. In a burst of fury, Kirk killed one the creatures with a single shot. Seeing this show of deadly accuracy, the others turned and fled. Kirk now turned his attention to his wounded first officer. Spock was barely conscious and losing blood rapidly.

"Kirk to Enterprise. Two to beam up. Mr Spock is badly wounded. Have Bones ready to receive him."

"What the hell has that pointy-eared bastard done?" McCoy muttered as he hurried towards the transporter room. It wasn't that he was especially angry with Spock, he was just concerned. When he saw Spock lying on the transporter pad, his demeanour changed instantly. "Shit. What the hell happened, dammit?!"

"I don't know, Bones. Must have been a fluke phaser shot," Kirk responded.

McCoy crouched down beside Spock and felt for a pulse in his wrist. Feeling the contact, Spock stirred. "Leonard," he mumbled.

"It's ok, darlin'. I'm here," McCoy soothed him. "You're gonna be alright."

McCoy now carefully lifted Spock and addressed Kirk. "Jim, come with me."

As they hurried towards sickbay, Kirk had some short time to think. He was amazed by how gentle Bones was being with Spock. It was so different to his usual bedside manner. And if he didn't know better he would have sworn that his CMO had called the science officer darling.

When they reached sickbay McCoy dispatched Kirk to fetch some blood while he saw to Spock's wound. "Come on, Spock," he muttered as he worked. "I'm not losin' ya to this. Just hold on."

Kirk now re-entered, bearing the precious green blood. "Where'd you get so much Vulcan blood?" he asked as he handed it over.

"We've been stock-piling Spock's in case of an emergency," McCoy responded as he hooked the blood up to an IV line. As the green liquid began slowly to seep down the line, he let out a breath. "That's all I can do," he said. "It's up to Spock now."

Kirk too let out a breath he hadn't been aware he was holding. The anger he had been holding in since making that first shot now threatened to bubble over as he looked at Spock. "If it's alright with you Bones, I have some business to take care of," he said, his voice betraying just hint of his anger.

"Thanks, Jim," McCoy replied. "Give 'em hell."

Once he felt that he had sufficiently vented his anger at the leader of the people who had nearly killed his science officer, Kirk headed back to sickbay. Some anger still lurked inside him and he hoped that Spock would be alright. He didn't know what he had been expecting, but what he saw when he entered sickbay certainly wasn't it.

Bones was lying on the bed with his arms wrapped around Spock. He was saying something, but Kirk was too far away to hear. Conscious that he was witnessing a highly intimate and private moment, Kirk slipped away. He made a mental note to tease Bones about it later, but only once Spock was better. He was happy for them, so they could have this for now.
