Kowalski had learned long ago that Rico had every answer to any need he could ever possess. He had found trust and confidence in his best friend years ago, and not long after that, he had discovered, in a fit of frustrated genius, that Rico somehow instinctively always knew what he needed.
On that particular night, he had stayed up late, working on an experiment in his lab. He had actually dared to disobey Skipper's orders and stay up even later than allowed before their mission the next day, and yet still he had not solved the dilemma of why his latest experiment failed to work. He did not even remember the particular experiment, but what he did recall as clearly as the beak upon his face was dragging himself to bed, throwing his tired flippers around the ladder, and missing his jump. He had fallen, instead, into Rico's bed, and Rico had turned over and cuddled up to him.
Kowalski had enjoyed the feeling of his best friend's flippers around him until he had realized just what was happening and had shoved Rico away. Rico's mouth had flown open as Kowalski's flippers had pushed against his stomach, and the very answer to Kowalski's frustration had sprang out of Rico's beak without waking him. Kowalski had grasped the tool as though it was gold, slid swiftly back to his laboratory, and had taken another turn upon his experiment. Rico's addition had made it work and left Kowalski's mind spinning both in delight and puzzlement for quite some months afterward.
Rico had everything he needed, but Kowalski had pushed him away at first. Yet, even then, when his genius had hit the proverbial brick wall, Kowalski had continued to pull objects out of Rico's mouth, and each object had always made his creations work effectively while Rico stayed asleep. The other male penguin truly possessed everything Kowalski could ever need, and when he had finally stopped running and allowed Rico to catch him, he had found everything else that had been missing from his life.
He had found love and passion beyond any of his wildest dreams, and he had found the relationship that he had been destined for even before hatching from his egg. Kowalski smiled as he nestled deeper into Rico. He had grown to know his love better than his superbrain knew anything else, and he had found, yet again and forever more, that Rico truly did have all the answers to anything Kowalski could ever need or desire.
Rico muttered in his sleep. Kowalski ignored the ball-shaped weaponry that popped out of his beak as he pulled his beloved mate more closely to his body. "I love you too," he murmured, perfectly understanding his love's incoherent squawk. Yes, he thought, dozing back off to sleep with a sweet and huge smile upon his face, Rico had everything he could ever want or need, and he loved him more than any words even his exhaustive vocabulary could describe.
The End
