Not all that long ago, she had rejected him. Yes, they had been friends for nearly a year, but she never truly appreciated the way he understood her, how he did everything he could to help her, and how he could always make her smile. Quite simply, how he loved her.
Yet, she had turned him away. And now, he was all she had.
It had happened just that morning. Tucked between the Daily Prophet and a catalog was a letter with the ministry of magic seal on the front. What she read nearly made her faint. Instead, she stood up and ran out of the Great Hall. With every step she took, the letter's words cut at her heart. The parents she loved so much were gone, never to return.
When she reached the empty common room, she fell onto the couch near the fire. Usually warm and cheerful, today the common room was cold and cruel. She had no one.
Just then, the portrait hole opened, and in came James Potter.
"Lily, what's wrong" he asked
Lily silently handed him the letter. As he read, his eyes became wide with terror.
"Oh, Lily, I'm so sorry!", he whispered, pulling her into a hug as her eyes filled with tears.
That was when she realized, crying into his shoulder that he was her only hope, her only peace, the only joy, her only strength. How in the world has she refused him?
She pulled away from him, still shaking.
"James, I'm sorry!" she cried, still sobbing. " I can't run anymore. In all my bitterness I ignored what was right in f ront of me. I love you"
James didn't say anything. He simply looked into Lily Evans' eyes as lifted her chin and gently pressed his lips against hers.
