SAUSAGES?
Sam sat in the clearing, surrounded by huge trees that were so tall the stars were barely visible. He was tending the fire while Merry and Pippin chattered about their success that day. Sam barely listened, though the first time he heard it, he admitted it was a worthy tale for two such small hobbits. "Sam, there we were, out hunting, between elevensies and lunchtime. We hunted and hunted but found nothing. Are you listening?"
Sam was watching Frodo as he slept all curled up in his blanket with only his face and one hand showing. Smiling to himself at the glow he felt surrounded by his closest friends and their protectors dozing nearby, he said, "Go on, tell me more."
The two were busy stirring and turning something in the pan that smelled wonderful. It was Pippin's turn to impress Sam with his bravery. "So there we were empty-handed. We decided to climb a tree to see if we could spy anything we could hunt. To our surprise, we found just what we love and enough for everyone! We pulled and cut and tugged and finally were able to slash two strings filled with our favorites and carried them back to camp. Weren't we brave?"
At the first storytelling, Sam had stopped listening at the point where they climbed the tree. Now he turned to them suspiciously and said, "What are you talking about?" They both began giggling and said, "Where do you suppose this delicious dinner came from?" They doubled over in laughter and Sam yelled, "Tree sausages?" He awoke that moment and realized he'd been dozing. Merry and Pippin were wrapped in their blankets sound asleep.
Sam looked at Frodo who opened one eye and nodded. Sam warmly smiled and waved a finger to Frodo, who smiled back and raised his hand a bit to Sam. Both were happy to be together. Sam looked up to the brightest star and vowed never to leave his side.
