They don't know how, but Marius and Eponine both managed to survive the fall of the barricade built during what would become known as the "June rebellion". None of Marius' friends had survived this attack, and by the time he had healed from his own wounds Cosette and her father were no-where to be found. Word on the streets was her father was an escaped convict and they were on the run from the law.
However, healing along beside him was Eponine, with a gunshot wound to her chest. "She almost died protecting you!" one of the nurses had explained to Marius, who had turned his head to the side to gaze at her while she slept. Somehow he finally saw a surreal beauty to her that he had never noticed about her before, as he continued to watch her chest rise and fall with every breath thoughts swarmed his head. The most prominent one finally making its way to the very front of his brain. "I am going to marry this woman" he thought to himself.
As they healed and grew stronger together he got to know more about her, which included knowing more about how she had felt, and honestly after everything still felt towards him. That following autumn they wed, Marius was embarrassed to have to kick her parents out of the reception, but he was determined to give her a life she had never known, a life that no longer included the pain that comes when one is at the bottom of the financial chain.
With his remaining funds that he had planned to put towards school, and with help from his grandfather, he and Eponine settled into a farm home with a matching barn, bought themselves a couple of horses, and set up a miniature farm as a means for financial support.
As he had planned and had promised to Eponine his blushing bride no longer knew the pain that had come with living on the streets or in her father's inn.
Marius also found that he could not have been any happier, and in the coming of winter, watched as Eponine's stomach swelled, as her stomach swelled so did his heart at the thought of being a father, what adventures would await them now?
