Author Notes: I'm bored. So I post. Something that is actually recent. It's funny what you'll write when you force yourself to. I never expected myself to write about Mikoto but the POV kind of morphed around her. Written for the challenge parental supervision at the livejournal community naruto100. Comments and constructive criticism are always appreciated.
disclaimer: disclaim'd
characters: Mikoto, Sasuke, Itachi
spoilers: This may or may not follow canon, because I'm so behind in Naruto that it's quite pathetic. Still, I don't think it really matters. Oh well. Enjoy.
A Mother's Wishes

Both of her sons are born with black eyes and black hair, but that's where the likeness ends.
When her first son is born, he gazes at Mikoto with large, curious eyes, but not a sound escapes his pink lips. Perturbed only for a moment, Mikoto smiles adoringly, thankful for such a quiet child. She knows she is special; not many mothers are blessed with such a docile son.
Five years later, her second son comes out screaming and crying and grabbing onto anything he can. Peering down at her son through her sweat-soaked hair, Mikoto laughs and tenderly strokes her baby's face, thankful for such a lively child. She knows she is special; not many mothers are blessed with such an energetic son.
As expected of Uchiha heirs, both are taught about tradition and pride and the importance of blood. Sasuke does not learn how to kill at the age of six and is slower in his studies than Itachi, but it's alright, Mikoto decides, because one prodigy is enough for her hands.
Secretly, so secretly that she doesn't even acknowledge the thought, she thinks that it is pleasant to have at least one normal child.
All Mikoto wants is happiness for her family. So she diligently watches her sons and tries to be the best mother she can. She amuses them so smiles are always there, comforts them so tears will never last, scolds them so they realize their mistakes, and loves them so they know they are never alone
Smiles and laughs and tears.
Tucking these memories in special place in her heart, she achingly vows to never forget.
Especially, in her later years when the boys are growing up, and sometimes all she can remember is Itachi calmly coming home while Sasuke runs eagerly after him.
Especially, in her later years, when Itachi greets her with empty smiles and cold hands, and she desperately clings to Sasuke, doting on him, so that he won't run after Itachi anymore.
When Mikoto dies, she wonders if she is bad mother. She wonders if maybe she had watched her sons more, than maybe she could have saved them better. Could have protected her family better.
Mikoto knows this is a lie, however.
She watched them, but she could not have prevented what they became.
She loves both of her sons, as if they are her lifelines.
Unfortunately, only one of her sons has ever loved her back.
