Just a random Shizaya AU, summary said it all. Please review!
The young boy sat on the wall, swinging his legs and staring out at the ocean. The wind ruffled his black hair, and his brown eyes gleamed red in the setting sun. He held the two silver rings in his shaking hands, wondering why things like this always happened to him. He slid the rings on, one on each index finger. One for Mom… he thought. One for Dad…
Another young boy was approaching the wall, his brown hair tousled by the sea breeze. Noticing the other kid on the wall, he ignored him and heaved himself up a few feet away. So this is someone else's happy place too, huh.
"So what happened to you?" the brunette asked after a few moments of silence had passed, "You've got that look."
The black-haired boy looked up, as if noticing him for the first time. "What…what look?"
The brunette scoffed. "Please. I've been told I have it, too. That look people get when they've lost everything. That blank look." The first boy looked away, over the ocean. The sun was setting over it, and the water was shining red.
He looked at the brunette, the wavering reflection of red over his face. "My…my parents, they just…" The other boy nodded, not needing to hear anymore.
"Yeah, mine, too." They sat in silence for a bit. "My name is Shizuo, by the way. Heiwajima Shizuo. What's yours?"
"Izaya. Orihara Izaya." They both watched as a school of fish passed just under the water, a few jumping up, leaving arcs of sparkling water suspended in the air, tinted blood red.
Finally Shizuo spoke again. "Mine died a few years ago. Plane crash. The pain doesn't
really go away, does it?" Izaya looked up at him, eyes sparkling with understanding.
"No," Izaya murmured, twisting the rings around his fingers.
Shizuo looked at the rings. "Were those theirs? Your parents." Izaya hesitantly nodded. "Do you want to talk about it?"
Izaya shook his head. "Nothing to talk about anymore."
"Nothing?" Shizuo chuckled a bit. "Come on. Memories? Anything? There's got to be some good stuff you remember."
"Well…" Izaya thought for a bit, then shook his head again. "If I talk about it, it'll bring the pain back."
Shizuo slid over, closer to the younger boy. "Yeah, that's what I thought at first, too. But it's really not like that." Izaya looked up, confused. "Like I said, it's been a few years for me. I didn't talk about it until a year after it happened. That year was the worst time of my life; I felt like there was no one there for me, no one who understood my pain. Trust me, talking is easier in the long run."
Izaya shrugged. "I think I'm good. But I'll let you know if I do feel like talking."
Shizuo put an arm around the young boy's shoulders. "I'll always be ready to listen, Izaya-kun."
For the first time since their deaths, the faintest ghost of a smile flitted across Izaya's face. Is this…I haven't felt it in so long…comfort? Acceptance? Izaya leaned into the boy's embrace, the top of the sun just peeking over the horizon. I'm overthinking it. It's not a specific emotion. It's just…happiness.
"You promise?" Izaya whispered, tapping the rings together, the solid tap-tap-tap like a punch to the gut every time.
"I don't just promise, I swear." Their legs swung in unison over the ocean below, the sea breeze blowing the smell of salt over them.
"They swore, too, you know."
"I know. Mine did, too."
"What happens if you can't keep your promise?"
"Don't worry. I will."
"But how do I know—"
"You're just going to have to trust me, Izaya-kun."
"Ok, Shizu-chan. I trust you."
Sorry, I just really love the idea of these two bonding, idk...sorry if they were a little ooc, I tried my best ;)
