A Song for Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore sat in his office late one night, writing a letter to a politician. He sighed, and wished for something to distract him. Just then, a knock sounded on the door. Smiling, he laid down his quill.

"Severus! Come in."

The door opened, and Severus Snape stalked into the room. Albus noted with alarm that he appeared somewhat inebriated. "Headmaster."

The use of that title indicated that this was an internal issue. Oh, dear... Well, at least it wasn't Voldemort... "What brings you here at this hour, Professor Snape?"

"I have composed a song in your honor," said Severus dramatically.

"...Oh?" said Albus.

"Yes." Severus cleared his throat, spread his hands out in the air, and began to drone.

"Twinkle, twinkle, little eye,

"How I wonder what you spy,

"Up above Hogwarts so high,

"Like a snitch, up in the sky.

"Twinkle, twinkle, little eye,

"How I wonder what you spy."

Severus ended the last note with a scowl and crossed his arms. "Well?"

Albus closed his mouth. He stood up and began clapping. "Thank you, Severus! Excellent! I've never heard you sing before!"

Severus threw his hands in the air. With a dramatic billow, he whirled on his heel and stormed out the door, slamming it behind him.

Albus stood in silent contemplation for a while. He ate a lemon drop. He walked slowly to the window, rested his fingertips on the sill, and looked out at the stars over the Forbidden Forest.

Softly, he sang.

"Twinkle, twinkle, little eye... How I wonder what you spy..."
