While I was in Paris, my heart was somewhere else, somewhere I couldn't see it, couldn't find it.
Oh, I had my heart with me; that is, my physical heart. I could feel the beat beneath my skin, helping the blood flow through my veins when I had been lifeless for so long. But I mean my heart, where you store your love, the life in your soul.
At first I assumed it was under the Earth, cradled in the smile of my brother Toby. But as time passed, I learned that was not the case; Aki Izayoi had given me the closest to closure I could receive at the moment. I was coping, and on the outside, people said I was coping well.
So where was it?
Flung into that place I wouldn't reach until I died a final time, the place I could not recall, the place I had been transported to between each premature death?
No.
I wondered if perhaps it had been stolen from me, the way a purse can get stolen from you, or a life, stolen by the demon of the Lizard who possessed my body in those final moments of the duel between Aki and I. I had nightmares of Ccarayhua stealing my own heart from me, in an attempt to have one of its – her? – own. It wouldn't be the first time an Earthbound Immortal stole a heart.
It was none of these. I discovered where I had left it months after returning home from Paris. His hair was longer than it had been and the starved spots in his face were filled in and his skin was no longer a ghostly pale. Though I was a year older than him, it irked me he had the nerve to grow taller than me during our separation.
I went up to him slowly, reluctantly, when I felt as if my entire being had been clicked back into place. Cautiously, no time to be shy, I placed my hand on his chest where I knew it would be.
I had found it.
"Can I have my heart back?" I joked, but he was the one who caught me off guard.
Kiryu Kyosuke smiled. "Only if you give me back mine first."
AN: Meh, didn't turn out quite the way I wanted, but oh well. I really do love this couple. Please review!
