I looked at Abbie.
"Witness Protection?" she asked again.
"Yes both of us," I replied letting my head hang.
"Just because they think that we may be the next murder victims?" she said lowering her voice to barely a whisper.
"Yes," I knew that this wasn't even close to the truth but it was better that what really might happen.
"We still get to see each other everyday right?" she said as her eyes widened.
"yes, we actually get to be sisters!" I said to cheer her up. It isn't that it wasn't true, just not the whole truth.
"Really?" she asked with a twinkle in her eyes.
"Yep.''
"What about our families?"
"They will have to think we are dead," I sadly said, "It's the only way to keep that group from our families."
"Oh."
"Come one," I started to drag her away, "act happy so no one suspects a thing."
I was thinking about Owen and how I will get to see him today as we walked down the hallway of our school.
"Sarah? Will I get to see Jason today?'' Abbie asked.
I turned around and started to reply when I saw the man halfway down the hall pointing a gun at us.
"Yes, of course," I said to make the man not know I saw him, "and we need to run right now, don't look back."
We took off running right before the bullets rang through the halls. All I could see was Abbie's blonde hair flying around everywhere, feel her hand in mine, and the sound of the gunshots were making me run faster.
We were about to run outside when someone grabbed us. I almost screamed until I saw our principal.
"Mr. Smith!" I whispered.
He let go of my arm and motioned for us to stay quiet and follow him. So we did, all of a sudden I was forced down on the tiles of the office and I heard fighting. Abbie bent down carefully and helped me up. When I was up I saw Mr. Smith in hand to hand combat with someone who looked vaguely familiar. The stranger punched Mr. Smith, who landed on Abbie's foot with a crack, I could tell it was her foot that made that sound. The stranger turned to us and I saw my boyfriend's dad.
"Mr. Thordson," I said with wide eyes.
"Sarah, Abbie follow me," he replied.
I quickly followed him outside to his black sports car. I opened the front door for Abbie. She limped to the front seat and carefully lowered herself in. After I had shut her door I got in myself.
"Sarah!" a boy's voice sounded. I turned around and saw the person I desperately needed.
"Owne!" I gave him a squeezing hug and held him close.
"Sarah, look at me," I lifted my head up so he could see.
"Your bleeding," his eyes looked with pain over my face.
"I pulled out my compact mirror and saw that he was right, I had a gash across my temple.
"I guess one of those bullets semi-found it's target."
"Bullets? What went on that there were bullets?" he demanded.
So I explained the story to him. As I spoke his hazel eyes ate me up. After I finished he started pulling his hair. It was cute but he got a teasing nickname for it.
"Tinkerbell," I whispered in his ear.
"Be quiet Peter Pan," he said as his face started to grow campfires on his cheek.
"Still need to find a better come back mister."
He started to protest until I leaned over and kissed him. His lips were soft and gentle. I closed my eyes and felt him pull me in close. His message was clear. "I love you."
He pulled away right as we were getting on the freeway.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
He looked at me as he said, "Witness Protection."
