Something I wrote when I over-analyzed the term 'happily ever after'. Seriously, I think way too much.

Disclaimer: insert hysterical laughter here

There is no such thing as a happy ending.

It may seem like it sometimes, but wait long enough and the story can only end in tears.

Some stories, the ones called 'tragedies', have couples that are doomed from the start. You know that one, or both, will die in the end.

This story was one that they call 'a fairy tale'. The story had two people in love, coming together against all odds. They say it ended at the happily ever after.

But all stories must end in tragedy. Even this one.

Especially this one.

Because when have so much, you have so much to lose.

And now, let us start from the happily ever after…

It was a cold winter day. The day before Christmas. Monday afternoon, and the church was packed.

The bride walked in…

"I do," the groom answered…

"I do," the bride answered…

Their wedding. The start of the happily ever after…

A hot summer day. A sleepy Sunday morning.

A baby cries.

"What do you want to name her?" he asks her.

They name her after their best friend.

The baby smiles.

The birth of their child…

A beautiful spring day. Another Monday morning, but this on was different.

The church was packed. The bride walked in and faced the groom.

The bride. That little baby girl, all grown up.

Their child's wedding…

The years go by. Everything seems perfect.

Everything is perfect.

But just like in a tragedy, they were doomed from the start.

How long until their utopia crumbles?

How long can perfection last?

The answer is always tragic. Perfection cannot last forever.

This fairy tale will come to a close one day.

Slowly, the two fade away. Fading faster and faster.

They cannot live forever.

'Ever after' is shorter than it seems.

Life still seems perfect. But they're fading away.

Their fairy tale is ending.

And they don't even know it.

That 'happily ever after' was doomed from the start.

Now life's a bit less perfect. Now they know they're fading away.

Now they know they're dying.

Now they know their utopia is crumbling.

Maybe they would be better off it their story was a tragedy. So much sadder, but so much less to lose.

Because they were doomed right from the 'once upon a time'.

They die, just as everyone knew they would. Slow and painful.

She dies from cancer. He dies a week later from a broken heart and old age.

Everyone knew it would come one day.

Their fairy tale has ended.

Perfection, utopia. They cannot last forever.

And the story is just as tragic as if they had died way back at the 'once upon a time'.

More tragic. Because now they have lost so much more.

When you have so much, you have so much more to lose.

All stories must end in tragedy.

There is no such thing as happily ever after. No such thing as a happy ending.

Do you still believe in fairy tales?
