It isn't my fault that I am pharaoh of Egypt. It isn't my fault that I happen to have a lot of responsibilities as pharaoh. And it is defiantly not my fault that because of all the responsibilities I accidentally forgot about our 1 year anniversary. The strangest part of all was that Zia didn't even care about these things. That had been made clear on our 6th month anniversary when I had taken her to dinner in London at a place Sadie always talked about. Later the night she had made it clear that while it was amazing they should cherish every day together instead of worrying about one. (Yea, I know, she's amazing) So, imagine my shock when I walked in the doors of the 21st Nome only to be met with a vase sailing past my face at alarming speed. Or, even more jaw-dropping was the sight of a fuming Zia right in front of me. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Sadie and Walt rise from their place at the couch where they had been talking. A few others stood as well all of them looking alert and ready.
"HOW COULD YOU?" Zia's voice sounded like a shotgun in the silence. If Zia didn't have everyone's attention before she sure did now. I could even see some at the top of the stairs where they had come from their rooms to see what all the commotion was. I myself was curious but before I could say anything she had already moved on.
"ALL THIS TIME I HAVE BEEN THERE FOR YOU! YET THE ONE DAY I WANT YOU TO BE THERE FOR ME YOUR NOWHERE TO BE FOUND! ON OUR 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY! WELL I GUESS THAT DOESN'T MATTER ANYWAYS." I locked eyes with her, she seemed to be having an argument with herself. Maybe it was my imagination but it felt like she locked out and hid the key as she had finally come to her conclusion. "We are done."
I stood there like an idiot unable to process what she had said. My body moved instinctively as I took a step forward. Then Zia did the one thing that made me believe that someone really could die from a broken heart: she took a step back. Everything else seemed to fall to nothingness as I watched the love of my life take another step back, then another, then another. She stopped and looked around at everyone then shockingly started running towards me. For a brief seconded I thought to myself haha this was just some dare or something that we'll laugh about later. Then she passed me without even slowing down and ran off into the night.
The rest of the night was spent with the majority of Brooklyn house searching for where Zia could have ran off to. It didn't take long for many of them to get tired and go back and get some sleep before school. But I stayed out waiting for her to pop out somewhere, even though on the inside I knew that she was long gone. It wasn't until Sadie called for the twelfth time that I headed back towards home.
When I entered the house for the second time that night everyone had gone to bed except for Sadie. She sat alone on the couch that she had previously shared with Walt.
"I thought it was supposed to be me waiting up for you." I told her. She gave me a small smile, but I was unable to return it.
"Now where's the fun in that, my dearest brother?" She replied. Sensing my palpable gloomy mood she let out a sigh. "She'll come back, you know. This wasn't her. There must be something else that happened."
"You sound so certain."
"Ah, well you know I'm always right." Then Sadie got a deep, meaningful look that I rarely see. "She will, Carter." And with that she stood and went up the stairs to her room.
Soon after I followed my sisters lead and went to bed myself. As soon as I closed my eyes I was lifted away. Figures, of all the times for my Ba to take a trip! I glanced around trying to find if anyone was here but all I could see was trees. Then, I saw a flicker of movement. I focused looking for another sign of life when a girl suddenly came running through the trees. And when I say running I mean running. This girl could compete in the Olympics and easily win gold. As she started getting closer to me I could get a good look at her. Her black hair contrasted the dazzling blue of her eyes. On her head laid a silver circlet like some kind of crown. As she went past me I collected my senses. There was no way I was losing two girls in one night. I ran/flew after her.
I managed to keep up with her and it wasn't long before I saw what she had been chasing. It looked like a jackal but something inside me told me it wasn't. I looked for differences' between the two beasts but couldn't find any. Seeing as I'm not as familiar with the animals as my sister is. I watched the girl pull back the arrow of the bow that I hadn't seen before. I wandered how I had missed it. She released the arrow go and just as the point of the arrow hit the monster it started dissolving into gold dust. Wait gold dust?
The girl suddenly turned around and looked straight at me narrowing her eyes. There was no way she could see me. Right? I was saved by another girl coming through the trees. This one was a ginger but that was all I could really see. Besides what she said was far more interesting.
"Thalia" She said referring to the first. "We have finished rounding up the hellhounds."
"Very good, Phoebe." Thalia looked at her. "I also got the information we needed."
"Really?! Then we must hurry. I'll tell the others to pack up camp quickly. Where are they planning on attacking?"
"Brooklyn" Thalia replied as I started to fade back into reality.
I bolted upright in bed my mind going a million miles per second. Attack? On Brooklyn? Hellhounds? Crazy girls running around hunting stuff? That actually sounded like something Zia would do. With that single though it felt like someone had jabbed a knife in where my heart was supposed to be. I threw the covers off of me and looked at my clock. 9:30. WHY DIDN'T ANYONE WAKE ME UP! I ran over and took a quick shower before putting on my clothes. Then I ran out of my room and down the stairs. It looked like all the kids had already went to school. With the exception of Walt and Sadie who were sitting on the couch talking. (Is that all they do?) I walked up to them.
Walt shook his head somehow knowing my unasked question. I had already prepared myself for that answer yet somehow my subconscious had gotten my hopes up. Working against myself I managed to sit down on the couch opposite of them and as calmly as possible recount what I had saw.
"An attack! Here? Bonkers, we would know!" Exclaimed Sadie.
"There are such things as sneak attacks." I countered. "Walt, have you ever heard of what they were hunting? They called them hell hounds."
"Sorry Carter, I've never heard of any other type of jackal, or them ever being called that. Are you sure you heard right? I mean Sadie has a point. If there was going to be an attack someone would have heard something."
KA-BOOM. Like clockwork the floor started to tilt sideways sending all of us to the floor. The windows shattered, the walls creaked, and I felt like I was getting over a massive hangover. Slowly I managed to stand up and walked over to where the window used to be trying to avoid the glass. I looked out at the familiar sight of Brooklyn to see fallen building and overturned cars. I felt Sadie and Walt came from behind me and look at the destruction.
"Yes. I do think I heard right." I answered.
HELLO FOLKS! OH YOU KNOW LITTLE OL ME. FINALLY REDOING THIS AFTER PUTTING IT OFF FOR SO LONG. I THINK IT'S MUCH BETTER BUT I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THE FLOW... THEN AGAIN YOURSELF IS YOUR WORST CRITIQUE. SO YOU'RE ALWAYS WELCOMED TO GIVE YOUR OWN OPINIONS HERE AND I'M ALWAYS GLAD TO HEAR THEM. -troll :P
