Haley James walked out on the stage, wringing her hands together nervously. She'd practiced and practiced and the moment was finally here, so she took a deep breath, opened her mouth, and began to sing.

Haley James, new freshman at Duke University, had come to the college two months ago on an English scholarship. She soon realized however, that her real passion was in music. She loved how beautiful lyrics tied together with a melody could create something magic- could brighten someone's day or help a person get through rough times. Haley was able to witness her inspiration for music affect the people around her- or at least, she hoped it the audience's smiling was for her music and not for the drinks that filled the club she played at on Friday nights. That was what she had just auditioned for- a regular time slot at Mickey's Club and Bar, a popular spot for college kids in the area. She realized it would be a struggle, juggling her English scholarship and a job in one, but she knew it would be worth it.

Haley walked into her dorm room and saw her roommate, Brooke, lying on the couch- hangover, no doubt.

"Rise and shine Brookie!" Haley said, while opening the curtains and getting out a cup of water and two advils for her friend. Brooke sat up and complied but groaned at the sunlight " uggh , Hales. What time is it anyways?" Brooke stretched out her arms, part of her smooth stomach peeking out of her cami. Brooke went to Duke University as undecided, but had currently just made the cheerleading squad and had been busy as ever the last couple of weeks. She had long brown hair, cut into stylish layers and a killer smile with dimples that would melt any man's heart – in short, she was gorgeous and all the guys in their dorm seemed to notice. While this didn't exactly help Haley's self esteem, Brooke was way too nice for Haley to ever be mad at her.

"It's already 10am." Said Haley " And didn't you have a class that started at 9? Brooke… C'mon we've only been going here a few months. What happened last night anyways?" Brooke sighed, but knew that Haley meant well and was only just concerned about her " Oh little Haley, lighten up. There was a rager in this kid Nathan's dorm..You know the one I mentioned before? You should of went it was amazzzzing. And you know he has a brother Lucas? HOT! I think I may have met my soulmate…" As Brooke went on, Haley couldn't help but be amused at her antics. She laughed and omg'd at the appropriate times as Brooke went on to describe mysterious Lucas who was " so hot he'd start a wildfire."

As Brooke went on talking ( she was quite good at that , Haley learned), Haley took a moment to observe her surroundings- she had a great, albeit eccentric roommate, found something she'd love to do and had a place to express her music, and was proud of herself for feeling like she'd acclimated so well to this new environment, almost a little too smoothly. Little did she know, there was a boy waiting just around the corner to rock her world. Nathan Scott
