Kagome is the sort of person who will give everyone a piece of herself, until there is nothing left.

The Girl and Her Monster

She feels every single beat of her heart until it stops.

It pumps fast, fast as hummingbirds, then it slows and slows and slows… fingers cold and the jewel even colder.

Kagome wakes in a burning sweat, flames singeing the edges of her skin.

The nightmare is already leaving her thoughts with each second.

She squints when dawnlight stabs her eye, unfeeling and distant, soft colors painting over the sky. Pushing off the covers, she walks over to the window, dazed from the dream that continues to slip. There is nothing to make of it yet it felt frighteningly familiar in its strangeness.

She decides to not think about it further-it's her birthday after all.

With that, she dresses early for school, makes conversation with her mother in the kitchen, and prepares lunch. Her grandfather prays over her-fifteen; now old enough to live, but too young to know of wisdom; he asks the gods to give her that desire to grow. She rolls her eyes as she bites into strawberries.

Tepid air touches her face as she steps outside, leaves rustling above. Her brother follows shortly after and she pauses to wait for him. Together, they pass the shrine, solemnly still, but she halts. Without reason, she goes towards the doors, unsure of why she needs to check in there. She really needs to get to school, she thinks, as she moves down the stairs.

Scratching sounds echo from beneath the well, urgent and hard.

Was the cat here?

Kagome surmises it's nothing and turns to exit-

A flash of white engulfs her, obscuring her brother's shocked face and she falls into air.
