Author's Note So, this is a present for my friend's birthday. Happy birthday dude! :3
A lone core went whizzing past on the guidance rail, mumbling to itself. "Go to testing sector A. Go to testing sector B. Go to testing sector C. Go check on Her. Go to testing sector A. Go to testing sector B. Go to testing sector C. Go check on Her. " It's white optic spun around sporadically, twitching every 10 seconds. The core was one of the few remaining; being that it never strayed from its set schedule. It was the Routine Core after all.
"Go to testing sector A. Go to testing sector B. Go to testing sector C. Go check on Her. Go to testing sector A. Go to test-" The core cut itself off after hearing a light noise. Its optic flickered as it swiveled around on the rail. "testing sector B. Go to testing sector C. Go check on Her. Go to testing sector A-" It was cut off by the noise once more, this time louder. It was a humming noise, one much akin to a computer, or other piece of electronics. It looked around once more, this time noticing a gray cube with discolored hearts sitting in the shadowy corner of the maintenance hall.
The core looked around frantically, not knowing how exactly to deal with the situation. It wanted to inspect the cube closer, but it couldn't stray from the pre-determined path. That was unknown, and the unknown was frightening… Maybe even deadly… The cube made another soft humming noise. The core shook, completely indecisive on whether or not it should continue.
"Inspect cube in maintenance sector A-22." The core said quietly. It lowered itself on the rail, and zoomed in its optic to see the cube better. It appeared to glow faintly, though it could not decipher the color. Upon closer inspection, it saw that they weren't hearts. They were broken heats, split in two.
The core zoomed out, instantly feeling something. A virus maybe, short-circuiting? It could not tell why it was, but something made its coding feel… Sorry for the cube. "Begin weighted cube transfer." The core announced. A small magnet, designed to create no interference with the systems, switched on, and pulled the cube closer. As soon as the cube attached, the Routine Core felt warmth, like when your processors run for too long.
The cube hummed once more, in what sounded like a happy tone. 'I won't hurt you. I won't stab you in the back.' The cube whispered, shocking the core, almost enough to drop it. Moving its casing out of the way, it looked down to see the hearts melting back into place, reforming the complete shape, and taking up a light pick color. The core went off back to its normal rounds, happily mumbling its schedule to itself, the cube humming every so often.
'I love you…'
A/N: Those cubes, man… They get in your head… Agh!
