Catalina
Deep blue sea green eyes, dark brunette hair and a smile that kicked the sun of its domain, okay, that last bit is a bit too much, but Catalina Maria was my whole world back during the days when I was a medical student. Kel glanced down at his hands, realizing they'd tightened their grip on the iron bar without any conscious effort from him. They think they know me. They say I'm stubborn, a confirmed bachelor and such. I haven't even told Dixie any different, and she's the only other woman I've allowed myself to get close to. I let people think we tapered things off for other reasons then the truth. Heck, even the head nurse doesn't know the true facts. I tell myself my private life is my own.
The well known doctor looked over the beach with the summer's sun shining down on his head. I never talk about her to anyone or of the summer we married; it hurts too much. Her eyes, smile, and hair still haunt my dreams. She was so full of life. We spent hours out on the lake, went skydiving, and filled hours talking about our dreams. I'd managed to push her memory away until now.
Kel turned his head towards the group gathered under the makeshift pavilion. Dixie's old classmate, a gal just hired by Rampart General, was having a wedding reception. The girl had blue sea green eyes and dark auburn hair. The head surgeon turned back to face the ocean.
I had just graduated from medical school, and she had a promising career as a concert pianist. We did all the crazy stunts my schooling had prevented, knowing I wouldn't have time once my internship began. Kel fought back tears which threatened to fall and curled his fingers around the rail as if he wanted to break the thing in half …that darn car fire. It wasn't supposed to happen. The mechanic who worked on the vehicle claimed he had thoroughly checked the engine out before she even drove off for her first concert. I should have listened to the voice inside my head; I should have taken her myself in my car. I should have… Kel's thoughts were halted when he felt Dixie lay a hand on his.
"What's wrong, Kel? Don't tell me I'm imagining anything either." Dixie said as she lifted an eyebrow, her mouth set in a solid line. He thought she looked just like his grade school teacher when she cornered him on a subject that he needed to come clean about.
"Just a ghost haunting me," Kel found himself sighing and flexing his fingers.
"Want to talk about it?" Dixie asked softly; she hated seeing such a good friend missing out on such good fun especially since it was clear he was hurting.
"No, not really, but…" Kel said as he sighed yet again as his shoulders sagged, "…maybe, it's time I did."
NOTE: I know that's a strange way to end a one shot. What can I say? It's the way it wanted to end.
