A/N: Okay, this idea came to me last night. Sorry if they seem OOC. I tried to keep them in character, but I may have failed.
Disclaimer: If I owned RENT, do you think I would be writing fanfictions?
The storm raged outside, lightning flashing, thunder rolling, and though Maureen hated to admit it, she was scared. The darkness had always terrified her, but she wasn't sure why, and as the thunder crashed over her head, she stood and made her way from the couch into Mark's room.
"Mark?" she whispered, just barely able to make out his sleeping form on the bed.
She stood over him and gently shook his shoulder, causing him to jerk awake.
"What the hell-oh…Maureen. What's wrong?"
Silently, she began to play with her long curls, twirling then nervously in her fingers, and sat down on the edge of Mark's bed. A flash of lightning, followed by a loud crash of thunder caused Maureen to jump, and suddenly Mark knew.
"Mo…come here. It's okay. It's just a storm. Nothing to be scared of."
"It's not the storm. It's…"
"The dark," he finished.
She nodded. Mark hated to see her this way, so afraid, so…fragile. He knew she would be upset if he called her fragile out loud, so he kept his thoughts to himself.
"Mark…hold me."
Her voice was low and soft, but he heard it. He pulled her into his arms and, as she lay in them, he inhaled her sweet scent, wishing they could stay like this forever.
"Mark? Will you tell me a story?"
He smiled.
"What kind of a story, baby?"
She shrugged against his chest.
"Any kind."
"Hm…okay. Once upon a time, there was a devilishly handsome young prince named Mark…"
Maureen slapped his arm playfully.
"Mark!"
"Okay, okay. Once upon a time, there was the most passionate girl that ever lived. She was sweet, beautiful, and she had the voice of an angel. She found love with a poor boy who loved her in spite of every fault, her stubbornness, her over-dramatic ways, her self-centeredness, everything. Then the girl was kidnapped by an evil witch named Fate. Now, Fate wanted to make the girl as miserable as possible, so she removed the boy from the girl's life completely. The boy was devastated that he had lost his princess, and lived out the remainder of his life whispering her name over and over to the wind, and carving her name into stone. The girl escaped Fate and tried to find the boy for years. When she did find him, she found his body on the ground, holding the stone. With tears running down her face, she traced her fingers over the letters of her name, and placed her body next to his and wrapped her arms around him, and there she stayed, until the end of time."
Mark paused and looked down to find Maureen sleeping peacefully. Smiling, he ran his fingers through her hair and kissed the top of her head.
"And the princess's name…was Maureen."
