Say It with Footwear

(For my mother.)

I was intrigued by the challenge on Pretender 100 to write a drabble about socks.
This is my first attempt at a 100-word limit, and it turns out I'm wordy!
Who'd have thought:-)

Disclaimer: I wrote this for fun. Jarod & Miss Parker do not belong to me, but they tell me stories every once in a while. The Auxiliary president mentioned below is mine, and she says it's OK as long as I don't use her real name.

Constructive criticism and typo-alerts are always welcome. (This header is now officially longer than the story!)

"Nice socks." The Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary president smiled at the candycanes adorning Jarod's ankles. "Early Christmas present?"

Jarod paused on the ladder, glancing downwards. "No, I just like them. I wasn't allowed to wear colors where I grew up."

"Grandad knitted me a pair of wool skating socks every Christmas. His way of showing love, I guess. Warm, but they itched like crazy. "

She smiled at the star he'd placed on the treetop. "It's perfect, Jarod."

Later, he walked home carrying a bag marked "Auntie's Needleworks."

Christmas morning, Miss Parker found a single gift under her tree:
Made them myself.
