A/N: This fic came to me when I was listening to Harry and the Potters' 'Save Ginny Weasley from Dean Thomas' and I just had to write it down. Please review, constructive criticism is great.
Disclaimer: Harry Potter belongs to JK Rowling, not me. Unfortunately.
'And I don't want you caught in between
Like Sirius Black and my mom and my dad'

Harry: You know why I stopped it, and it wasn't because I wanted to!' (Deathly Hallows, p. 100)
Missing moment
'There was still one last golden day of peace to enjoy with Ron and Hermione.' Yet, as his heart lifted, Harry knew that one name was missing- Ginny. As if Hermione had perfected Legilimency, she looked at Harry carefully, and said "You've broken up with Ginny, haven't you?"
Harry gazed at her morosely for a second, before nodding, his heart already aching with her absence.
"You- what..." exclaimed Ron incoherently, now staring at Harry angrily, "Why?"
Hermione shook her head impatiently. "Oh, honestly Ronald, it's obvious-"
"Look, Ron, " interrupted Harry hastily "I didn't want to."
"Then why did you?" demanded Ron, his ears turning red.
Harry's sense of annoyance grew. How could Ron think that he would hurt Ginny without a proper reason?
"Enough people have been caught in between me and Voldemort."
Hermione glanced up sharply, and made to interrupt, but Harry ploughed onwards, knowing that he had to make Ron understand.
"Everyone I care about," Harry continued, his throat constricting, "My mum, my dad… Sirius- Dumbledore, even, they've all died protecting me. And I can't... Ginny can't…'
He felt a lump in his throat and blinked furiously, trying to quell the rising tide of emotion which threatened to overwhelm him. Ron was gazing at him now, silent, whilst Hermione's eyes filled with tears.
"Harry…" she implored, but he shook his head.
"It's true," he said, "If I stay with Ginny, then Voldemort will target her to get to me. And it'd work as well. I can't… I can't put her in that danger."
Ron gazed at Harry for a second, then nodded, seemingly unable to speak. So, united, they turned, and stared at the declining sun on Hogwarts' walls, knowing that tomorrow they would fight, but today they could live.
