Prologue
Human. What's so goddamn great about being human? I'm weak, I'm tired and I definitely won't be living forever. It's really not fair.
I've been part of the Cullen family ever since I was born. Now you're probably scratching your head wondering how it's possible for a human to be part of a family of vampires. You know especially with the whole vampires eating humans thing. Oh and the other vampires can't have babies thing. The Cullens are different. They call themselves vegetarians because they don't eat people but animals, which I find kind of comedic and am thankful for. Carlisle Cullen found me fifteen years ago in the forest and he could have easily eaten me as a pre-dinner snack. But he didn't. He took me in like I was part of the family. I haven't missed out on anything different but a real family (other than Jasper looking at me as if I'm a huge piece of steak from time to time.)
I do however feel out of place all the time. I'm not strong, I'm scrawny. I'm not beautiful or flawless; I'm gawky looking and have acne. I'm not smooth or graceful, I'm awkward and clumsy. I squirm at the sight of blood. But I can always tell that my family, who are nothing like you'd think vampires are like, always try to make me feel welcome. Yeah, welcome, believe or not. Alice gives me girl advice; Rosalie makes it her life's mission to make sure I don't leave the house looking like crap, Edward helps me with my homework and Emmett has always been there to ward away anyone who tries to pick on me. I had never really thought of them as bloodsucking creatures who are constantly trying to kill me. Well, you know except for Jasper. I try to steer clear of him just as Carlisle told me to. (He's still learning how to control his hunger.) I really should give them all credit. To live twenty-four hours, seven days a week, three-hundred sixty five days a year with a human and not tear me apart and eat me. From what they tell me they're used to my scent. And while we're on the topic, does anyone else find it weird that we have personal scents that some can trail? I still find weird, after the crazy things I've seen.
Wait, sorry, I haven't even told you my name and I've been rambling on about vampires. My name is Benjamin Cullen and I'm a human living in a family of vampires.
Oh and for future reference, just Ben or Benny is fine, I hate Benjamin.
