It all happened on that night, that one fateful night.
First Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye was sitting on a bench, alone, at around 10:30 PM, staring up at the stars. She was surprised when she looked to the empty space beside her and saw that it wasn't so empty anymore. Sitting there now was the Colonel, her Colonel, Roy Mustang. She wondered how he had gotten to be there without her noticeing, but shrugged it off as carelessness of the mind and saluted him.
"Sir, to what do I owe this...visit?" she asked.
"At ease, Hawkeye. We're off duty." He said cooly.
"Yes, sir." she replied. He sighed. He wasn't getting much of anywhere with this, much less than what he had been trying to do in the first place.
"Well, Hawkeye, as you know, the Brigadier General has recently been killed." He started. She nodded.
"Yes, what about him?" She asked.
"Well, I'm being sent to Central to take his place. I've been told that I can not take you and the others with me, unfortunately." He was trying to stay uniform, but, Riza could tell, this was hard for him.
"This may be the last time I see you, Riza. I wanted to leave you with something you would remember." Before she could register in her mind that he had said her first name, he leaned in and kissed her.
She lost all the feeling in her body. She had not been expecting that. She had thought about it, many times. But she had never thought it would actually happened. She never dreamed that he could somehow feel the same way about her that she felt about him. It was against decorum and it was against logic, at least to her. Still, she could hope for it to come true. Now it was, finally, and he was leaving her forever.
When she finally pulled away, she threw herself into embraceing him and cried quietly into his shoulder. "I don't want you to go..." She whispered.
"I don't want to go, either, but I must. If I want to make this country a better place, I have to." He said, a single tear rolling down his cheek.
Riza smiled to herself. He could stay here, he could be with her, he could do anything else in the world, but still he was aiming for the top, thinking of the people and not of himself. That was so like him.
"I understand." she replied into his ear and slowly pulling herself from the embrace.
What they didn't know...was that they were being watched.
