It's the first time he tries to do it; a new home for him and his boys, a new home without Mary; he never wanted this, never dreamed he'd have to try and do this alone and with every day that passes it most definitely does not get any easier, no matter how much he more accomplished he gets at knowing what his boys need. He carries Sammy over the threshold and sets him down and watches as the toddler sets off to amble round exploring on his little wobbly pudgy legs; there's no stopping him now he's up and mobile. He turns back to look at Dean, his silent little boy who just isn't getting past the loss of his mother; John wishes he could get a real smile or hear Dean's happy little boy voice again, but they're lost in the smoke and ash of their old house along with Mary. He's told the boys about this new home they're going to make for themselves, even though he knows Sammy's still too young to understand; Dean looks terrified and just isn't crossing that threshold, even when John holds out a hand to him. John knows exactly how he's feeling, home isn't what it used to be : not when you know it can all be ripped away from you, taking everything that matters – maybe trying to settle down and make a new home isn't what they need after all.
