A/n: First ghost hunt fic, hopefully not the last. Naru isn't in this fic  though.

Taniyama Mai did not like hidden rooms, especially dark ones, because she keeps getting trapped in them. It wasn't that she didn't try avoiding them it's just that they emit occasional cries of help from various voices, crying little girls, moaning old women and once even a whimpering dog, those that she finds impossible to ignore. Of course not a single one of those dark, hidden places actually contained a girl, an old woman or a dog. They didn't even contain anything living, just another spiteful ghost, pulling Mai into anywhere dark and cramp.

And that's where she was, in another hidden room, somewhere in that old big mansion, filled with ghosts. It was little boy this time.

She sighed, now used to this kind of situation. Her only worry was her boss' remark. She could just see that beautiful face of his looking down at her annoyed, his usual curt words of reprimand ready to roll off his annoyingly frank mouth.

"Sor-y, for being so useless" Mai grumbled "Not everybody can be so competent, Mr. good-at-everything-and-know-it"

Mai in times of being trapped like this would find herself thinking of a lot of random stuff, how minds always do when not preoccupied, like what's for dinner that night or her homework. This day however, after Naru had once again fleeted in her mind's eye, her thought of him continued.

Why did she ever fall for a guy like him? was the primary thought. Her mind revolved around the question, seeking answers. She flipped through her memories of him in search of that defining moment which made Naru, rise up to a special position in her heart.

She supposed that her dreams of him, initiated the idea of her falling for him. Why else would you dream of guy?

But then again after "dream Naru" turned out to be Gene, why had her feelings not left? Could Gene have been the one they were for all along?

She ruffled her hair in confusion. This is the problem when you start thinking that you fell in love with guy because you dreamed of him, only to find out that it was actually his dead twin brother you were dreaming of.

Maybe I really did fall in love with him after thinking that I did. A voice in her head answered louder than all the other murmurs of theoretical thoughts.

It somehow fell into place, Gene made her see the possibility of falling for the narcissistic bastard, and Naru after that, proved to be someone she could actually really fall for.

She sighed again, deeper than the first one, her shoulders drooping in sudden exhaustion. So that was that

The door opened with a long creak, from its rusty hinges.

Takigawa stood scanning the room for a familiar brown amongst the shadowy figures inside. He spotted the curled up body he was looking for yet again.

"Mai" he called out

Mai looked up at the monk, who entered the room unnoticed. Once she comprehended who it was she smiled in relief.

"The ghost was exorcised hours ago" the monk informed her.

"Oh" she answered lamely "so it wasn't locked anymore?"

"You could've at least tried opening it those five hours you were stuck inside" he said exasperated "What were you doing inside anyway?"

"Thinking" answered Mai plainly

"You should do that more often" he said with a grin.

Mai smiled, "I know"

A/n: At first I wanted Naru to be the one to rescue her, but when I did, he kind of fell out of character so I used Takigawa instead.

P.S.: I did not want to make Mai look like she doesn't think, I like Mai a lot.
