A Trip to the Zoo
"Class, let's all try and stay together, now. Everyone, please stay with your assigned partner, and do NOT throw food at the animals…" Miss Anderson's voice droned on and on. She'd been here hundreds of times; it was nothing special to her.
For seven-year-old Sam Winchester, however, it was something out of a dream. Daddy rarely took the boys anywhere but motel to motel; a school field trip to the Zoo was a total treat. Sam jumped up to try and see his older brother, who was in one of the groups in front, near the lion's cage. He knew Dean was just as excited at he'd been about this, but that he'd never show it, being far too cool to be excited about anything to do with school, let along some dumb field trip.
But Sam knew inside Dean was happy, and that made him happy. He glanced over at the tiger's pen, his hazel eyes wide. They were such huge, powerful animals; it made him smile to think that Daddy always called him "Tiger". He'd never be great big like one of them!
"Do you think they're happy?" Sam asked Becca, the classmate he'd been paired with. Becca Spriggs had been the first kid in their new school to walk up and talk to him. She ate lunch with him every day, and they both found out they like the same cartoons. For a girl, she was really very nice.
Becca had been looking over at the giraffe enclosure. She was the same height as Sam, a little wisp of a girl with dark brown hair and expressive gray-green eyes. "What?"
"The tigers, Becca. Do you think they're happy?" Sam repeated the question, gesturing over at the proud creatures sunning themselves on the grass. Nice or not, girls could be so SILLY sometimes.
Becca shrugged, sending her braids bouncing up and down. "I dunno. I guess so. My big brother says animals should be free, and that zoos are bad."
"How come?" Sam's eyes grew wide; how could anyone think this place was bad?
"'Cause he says animals shouldn't be in cages."
"But people take care of them. They have a home. They don't have to keep going from place to place. They don't need to worry about –"
"Sam Winchester! Rebecca Spriggs! Stop dawdling and come along!" Miss Anderson sounded a little mad now.
"C'mon! We'll get in trouble!" Becca gently pulled at Sam's hand, leading him away from the giant striped cats.
He turned and gave one of the lounging beasts one last look.
"I hope you're happy", he whispered.
