The Simplest of Things

Jack didn't like being away from Sam, particularly at night. Most nights, now, she was asleep at his side. He could always fall asleep when she was out cold next to him. Tonight was different, it couldn't be helped. Sam had just given birth to their daughter, Isabella, the day before and tomorrow they would both be coming home.
Isabella was the middle name of Sam's mother. Jack smiled as he reflected how they already came up with a nickname, Bella. For, she was the most beautiful infant either he or Sam had ever seen.
He was not a diarist, but if he were, he decided, tonight he would make a list of things that satisfied him. The simplest of things. Bella would top the list, of course. Then would come the nights, any night, he lay with Sam after their lovemaking, talking in murmurs as sleep overcame them. Dinners with friends, or alone at home. Watching movies while cuddling on the couch. Her hand in his hand as they were walking on the street.
Jack felt himself easing to sleep with one final thought. All of the things he would be able to do with Bella's little hand in his.
