The last thing you asked of me was the one thing I would never have willingly done. You did not ask me simply to hurt you, although Gods know that would have been far bad enough. No, you asked me to kill you and, in so doing, kill my heart and soul, kill the only reason why I've ever strove so hard to be good and put up with as much crap out of the Potters and their kind as I have. You asked me to kill you, and I said no.
But then you begged and pleaded with me, and though I pleaded with you just as fervently to ask any one else to do it, I knew the whole time that, in the end, I would cave. I would give you what you wanted, what you asked for, just as I've always tried so hard to do. I never have been able to tell you no, Albus.
So I did the deed. I murdered the only one I've ever truly loved, but now, at last, it is my turn. I'm dying now, you see as I am sure you do for I can feel your beautiful eyes looking down upon me, and I shan't even try to stop it. I've waited for this moment. I've longed for it ever since you made me promise you that I would be your death, the death of the most wonderful man I've ever known, the death of the man who was my best friend, my mentor, my father, and my love all rolled into one.
I've waited for this moment, and now it has finally come to me. I let my eyes drift close with a smile tugging at my frown for the first time in far too long a time. I surrender peacefully, gratefully, confident that soon . . . soon, my love, I will reawaken and we will be together forever more.
