For some reason Mulder had thought a change of scenery might help to relieve the tension that had obviously developed between he and Scully. That's why he had suggested going to Charlie's for a cup of coffee. He was kicking himself for it now, not only had he had to listen to Scully go on about how he was avoiding his problems but she had then inexplicably agreed to go with him in a huff. He had obviously done something- he just couldn't figure out what.
They walked almost all the way to Charlie's in horrible silence. Eventually Mulder couldn't take it anymore.
"Scully…" She stopped and looked at him with an almost dangerous expression.
"Is something bothering you, I mean is something going on because…" He dropped the question as Scully's face grew more and more acidic.
" Oh wait Mulder, I'm sorry, is this you actually giving a damn about how I feel?" She said as tears began to well up in the corners of her eyes much to her dismay, she turned away in an attempt to hide them. Mulder felt this statement like a smack in the face . He wasn't sure why this hurt so much. Maybe it was just the stress of the week, or the way she was crying now or how completely she misunderstood how he really felt.
He reached forward and took her by the shoulders and turned her towards him. She tried furiously to wipe away her tears but they kept coming, it was as if something inside her had snapped.
"Scully…Dana…" he paused shocked by what he was about to reveal.
" How can you say that? How can you even think that?"
Scully caught completely off guard by Mulder using her first name had no response she just stood there staring as tears rolled down her cheeks.
Mulder jerked his eyes away he couldn't meet hers anymore, he continued much quieter
"You are the most important person in my life, you're all I have left. The only person I can trust, the only person I ever have trusted"
Scully stopped crying.
Mulder suddenly became very interested in his shoes, it took all of his courage to swallow his pride and continue.
"I love you" he whispered barely audibly.
Scully stood there shocked and in spite of herself thrilled by what Mulder had just said.
Mulder took her silence as rejection and turned to walk away.
Scully reached out for his sleeve. "Mulder, wait-"
Suddenly words deserted her, she wanted desperately to tell him that, that she loved him to but she just couldn't form the words to express the depth of her feelings, so instead she reached up took his face in her hands and kissed him.
It was a short, sweet kiss. She pulled away shocked by what she had just done.
Mulder smiled at her and mumered, "Finally" and then kissed her much more passionately.

(inside Charlie's)
(Mulder and Scully are clearly visible to the customers in the coffee house)
"Oh how perfect" said Jo as she watched Mulder and Scully kiss on the sidewalk out front.
" They really are cute together" agreed Jake.
"Yeah, took em' long enough" chimed in Earl.
"Well I guess if I can't have him, I gotta admit they are pretty perfect together." Kelly sighed resignedly.
And as the four agents went back to their coffee, none saw Mulder and Scully walking off hand in hand.
